Default Weavers Way recovering from difficulties

Wow...I don't even recall hearing about this...from the Mt. Airy Times Express: Weavers Way Co-op, 559 Carpenter Lane, is well on its way to recovery, according to Board President Bob Noble.

After a difficult two years in which the largest member-owned consumer cooperative in the Philadelphia area, serving approximately three thousand member households, was thrown into scandal and a financial bind in upwards of $600,000, says Noble, "We're doing really well even though we still have debt. We consolidated most of our debt and are paying it off gradually. Other than that ... we're definitely making progress," said Noble.

It's good to hear that they're doing well, but I had no idea that this scandal had occurred.

I vaguely remember reading something about a scandal a while back, but can't recall much about it.

The bookkeeper was arrested recently and her trial is supposed to start this week. It's a long, messy story and she certainly bears a significant amount of responsibility, some of it legal. But there were others with responsibility who got off relatively easily, IMO.

The short story is that the coop grew as a business but didn't grow all its business systems at an appropriate rate. There was inadequate supervision at the staff and board levels. Most galling to me, is that the bylaws called for an audit, and a formal audit was never done.
