When discussing wise words in contemporary society, a more inclusive rhetoric should be employed.
Individuals, or men and women, or something of that nature should be substituted for "Men".
50% of humankind in ignored, when addressing all of humanity as "Mankind".

Yeah Yeah, I hope you aren't blaming Lincoln for some no-name laissez-faire apologist putting words in his mouth 50 years after he was killed?

The phony Lincoln quotes were published in 1916, just three years after ratification of the 16th Amendment (which permitted the federal government to tax individual incomes), and the year of the first presidential election after ratification.

As I see it, the only politician who acted untrustworthy in this scenario was Reagan, who parrotted the phony attribution of these words to Lincoln (they had been debunked long before Reagan repeated them). That exercise in dishonesty does not implicate all politicians, only Saint Ronnie.
