What is the quickest and safest way to bike from Mt. Airy to Chestnut Hill since I can't get through the construction? Is it ok to ride on the sidewalk if it's not too crowded?

In East Mt Airy, your best bet is Stenton Ave. In West Mt Airy, crossing via McCallum is nearly your only option. I agree that both streets are relatively busy and frightening for bicyclists riding legally. Side walks are still illegal, but I see plenty of cyclists using them, apparently unmolested.
