Let's ask the people who live there. They can call it whatever they want.

That said. Growing up, Once You past Upsal. You were in Dog Town .

If You ask What is Germantown, let me tell you that this is the biggest drug dealing town of Philadelphia, no less than 3 murders per month and it is a disgusting place................... including Mt.Airy

Given Germantown's rich history it's no wonder there are so many names for the different communities.

"Once in this town there were numerous villages and communites having their own names and individualities, such as:

Rittenhousetown, along Rittenhouse Street, west of Wissahickon Avenue.
Blue Bell Hill, round about Johnson Street and Wissahickon Avenue.
Little Britain at Wayne Avenue and Price Street
Pulaskitown near Queen Lane and Pulaski Avenue
Smearburg in lower Germantown, south of Penn Street
Brick Yard, Sawdust Village, and Potterton Heights on the eastside in lower Germantown
O'Kane's Point, in the triangle bounded by the Reading Railroad "Y" and Chelten Avenue
McNabbtown, Walnut Lane and Chew Street
Irishtown and Fenian Hill, in the neighborhood of Wister Street south of Chelten Avenue
New Jerusalem, near Haines and Critterden Streets
Pittville, Haines Street and Limekiln Pike
Pleasantville, Limekiln Pike north of Washington Lane
Beggarstown, Franklinville and Dogtown in upper Germantown
Mount Pleasant at Germantown and Mount Pleasant Avenues.

Now their identitiy is lost and their names almost forgotten. All have been merged in old Germantwon, Mount Airy and Chestnut Hill retain their early names, though being recognized as being part of the Germantown area. Pelham, Stenton and Queen Lane Manor aree new districts."

Pulaskitown and Brickyard lived into the 1970s, as they were 2 gangs in the area, along with Hollow (Happy Hollow Rec Center).

I'm only two years late answering PhillyBoy's question -- wonder if he still reads Phillyblog?

Yes, I remember the New Lyric Theater! Two cartoons, a newsreel and a Davy Crockett movie on Saturday afternoons for $.25.

Not that I really want to get into this negative discussion, but I just wanted to point out that this is an incorrect statement, which was used to attack what someone else had posted.

If you look at the map at http://www.library.upenn.edu/dataset...s/1854twpa.jpg
(which was also included in the Wikipedia article that you must not have looked at before dismissing), it clearly shows Washington Lane as the border of Germantown, so even if Johnson Street is considered the boundary now, it has not always been.

And of course, as someone pointed out, the city signs (the one I see just west of Gtown Ave) on Washington also show it as the boundary. So I think it would be easier to say that it is an unclear division, rather than jump on people and make definative statements that aren't supported by all of the evidence.

Okay, let's try this another way.

My neighbor, who was born in his house over 90 years ago confirmed that Johnson St is a border of Germantown.

Another neighbor, who has been in her house since the '40's, also confirmed it.

Mt Airy USA has been trying to claim Washington Lane as a border in order to "oversee" development of Germantown Avenue.....too bad they did that without talking to the existing neighborhood groups.

I wasn't t trying to say that I thought Johnson wasn't the border now, I was just trying to make sure people took all of the evidence into account, without immediately dismissing what someone posted solely because of the source (I know Wikipedia has its problems, but the article that person linked to had a legitimate reference in realation to what was being discussed - it might have been better to originally post the link to the UPenn version, but the map is the same) . I don't really care which street is the border, maybe because I don't know about the politics that you referred with Mt. Airy USA and development.

Some was said that Johnson has always been the border, and in 1854 it wasn't, so as a scientist, I wanted to make sure all of the facts are taken into account.

Your disclaimer in the first sentence was exactly what you were trying to do. Even the Battle of Germantown takes place at Johnson St, which is above Washington Ln and was long before 1854. MtAiry USA is trying to muscle in where it is not wanted in order to gain control over a neighborhood.
Wikipedia should never be used as a citing source of truth, as anyone has access to edit a cite to show favoritism to their own point of view. As to the outside source, without actual fact checkers to verify redirects as to their authenticity, only frther proves the problems with a site like wikipedia.
