Billy Ross makes very good points, but I have just two comments:
First there is an east-west surface route that connects at Wayne Junction and that is the #75 Bus that is soon to be restored as an electric trolley-bus as the wires were never taken down when it was "motoroized" a few years back. I think all the surface routes that connect there should make a common loop right in front of the main station dischage at the street level so connections could be done with ultimate ease and security. Now as to his comments about "good leadership at the state and city level" - - are we talking about the same state and city? Harrisburgh is the same cesspool it has been for years, and as far this city, long the most pervasively corrupt, and possibly most violent in the country, it will take more than two months with a popular new mayor to convince me. You haven't had the benefit of working with Michael for years; unfortunately for you you have been stuck with Donna Reed Miller in an area where people are too disorganized to get rid of an obvious hack. Trust me; he's that good, and funny too. He is better than Rendell, as he is self-effacing and principled, as well as creative and clever. He is not hype - he is for real, and you have only seen the beginning (and just barely that). As far as the Governor, he is one of the most powerful governors we have seen in a long time, and this stuff is right up his alley. He has the people behind him; they trust his judgment, and he generally gets what he wants. Note the dedicated funding for transit, for instance.
Where does the 75 go? I never heard of it. |

The Route 75 runs between the Margaret Orthodox El stop and Wayne Junction via Wyoming most of the way.
The headhouse and station buildings should be preserved, but it's hard to envision how it will look with high level platforms covering the bottom of them. There are some historic PPR stations in New Jersey which were built for low level platforms but now have high platforms in New Brunswick and Metuchen. |

Check out the City Planning Commission's updated plan for Germantown just posted on the Gtown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill board. Among the Planning Commissions recommendations for Wayne Junction is the following: 6. Complete rehabilitation of Wayne Junction Station including the preservation of the historic headhouses At present SEPTA is trying to clear the way for demolition of the principal headhouse which is described as Significant on the National Registration of Historic Sites. The building does not impede or intefere with any ADA accessibility improvements to the site. Demolishing it will do nothing more than leave an open space on the platform and remove one more vestige of Germantown. If you are concerned about the history of Germantown - and Philadelphia - being taken down in front of your eyes, please register your concern with SEPTA or comment on this site. for bringing this to our attention. I've been working every time that they've had a meeting. There is one more, and they will specifically discuss the head house. Hope that SEPTA doesn't tear it down between now and the meeting....(email from Jennifer Barr, who posts to Phillyblog).
Dear Friends of Germantown and Nicetown, Please attend a SEPTA-hosted community meeting on Monday, May 12th, 6:00 pm at St. Francis Assisi Church's Community Room, 4821 Greene Street and hear SEPTA's most up-to-date plan on their Wayne Junction Station renovation project. The project includes historic rehabilitation of the station, improved amenities for passengers, construction of a high level platform, installation of elevators, complete ADA compliant ramps, among other station improvements. Come and have your voice heard. Issues such as the Wayne Junction Headhouse will be discussed. Please contact Michael Dawkins at SEPTA with any questions at 215-580-3609 or <MDawkins@septa.org> . |
