I am looking for a Dominican hair salon or a salon specializing in African American hair in the city. I need something affordable, preferrably under $40 for a wash & set. The salon does not have to be in the Germantown area but it does have to be reachable by public trasnportation. If you could give me an idea of prices, type of products used, what your experience there has been like especially in terms of needing to make an appointment or walking in and what wait times are like I'd appreciate it. If you like one stylist better than another let me know. Also if you have an idea about hours of operation-- days of the week and an address/phone number I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I don't go to the salons anymore because I do my own hair in natural twists but a few months ago I decided to check out a natural hair care salon in Mt. Airy on Wadsworth Avenue near Cheltenham. It's across the street from the library on Wadsworth ave. It's called Etea or Etae, they have a website you can check out. They use an all natural product called Carmel that will make your hair so nice and straight without having to use a relaxer. It stayed in my hair for a few months, I couldn't believe it! That stuff really works. I don't know their hours or who the hairdressers are because I only went once.
Good luck. |

I go to Vivid Hair Salon @ 20th & Spruce. A blow dry & curl is $40. Their website is www.vividhairsalon.com.

A friend of mine has gone there regularly for a while and she called me last week on Wednesday morning in a tizzy because she had been waiting almost an hour for her stylist and her stylist wasn't there yet. She needed to get to work and the woman was not there when the salon opened. She asked for the name and address of my salon so she could go get her hair done in a timely fashion and get to work. According to my friend she also heard that there were issues with the salon's lease and that they may be moving soon because the building is being sold. You might want to consider these issues if you're contemplating making them your permanent salon.

There is a VERY popular place - called Roberto Martinez on 5th Street (just across the Boulevard). People "in the know" go there for Maria. She's a wiz with a brush and a blow dryer - your hair will be flowing and straight.
They don't take appointments, so it's first come, first serve. Be prepared for the Dominican music to be playing and the stylists to be dancing and speaking in spanish.....but your hair will be magnificent! $20 or $25 -can't remember. Last edited by Steff : 08-13-2007 at 02:02 PM. |
