Councilwoman Miller to face yet another foe Yet another candidate has announced plans to run against 13-year Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller, who narrowly clinched the Democratic nomination in May's primary thanks in large part to the fact that a crowded field of opponents split the anti-incumbent vote. James H. Foster, a longtime community activist in Germantown and Mount Airy, said last week that he plans to run against Miller as an independent candidate in November's election. The Rev. Jesse Brown, a former Democrat and anti-casino activist, also plans to run as an independent, while Brian Rudnick hopes to qualify for the ballot as a Green Party candidate. Foster, a lifetime registered independent, owns an auto repair and restoration shop in the Eighth Councilmanic District. He's campaigning on a promise to open an active office in the Eighth District and pledging greater transparency on where funds that go through the council member's office are directed. He's none too pleased with Miller's performance over the years, and has no problem saying so. Still, when asked if he was helping Miller's reelection chances by further dividing the field, he said: "Of course." The field has to get smaller before Election Day, Foster said. Just don't expect him to be the one to bow out. "There needs to be some intelligent decision-making among those running, which is something we didn't see in the Democratic primary," Foster said. Still, with the power of the Democratic Party behind her, Miller will be tough to beat no matter how many (or few) opponents she has. Last edited by nwxse : 07-30-2007 at 12:14 PM. |

Here come the egos, and of course, Foster's is not small by any measure. All this will do is split the ticket.
Funny thing is, Foster said, "There needs to be some intelligent decision-making among those running," without any sense of irony! |

I think this is great news.
An uphill battle for sure, but as I recall, Foster has shown his meddle regarding the abuses at the Johnson St properties, (former asst care facilities), and the Historical certification to prevent their demolition. And to the naysayers.....Ya gotta better idea about now? |

Concerning “splitting the ticket”, why should the various candidates cooperate and decide on one person? I would hope that they are running because they believe that they can do a superior job, not just to defeat d.r.m.
Considering how Philly is completely under the thumb of Tammany, I mean the Democrats; I’d welcome anybody from the “outside”. Yis, paul |

Yes, Rev. Jesse Brown. He basically has inherited the Neighborhood Networks and Irv Acklesberg endorsement and the Acklesberg election "team". He has decades of experience as a national leader on issues that may not matter much to folks in Chestnut Hill but are very relevant to resdients of the district - alchohol and tobacco ads aimed at kids and especially African American kids in urban neighborhoods. He has a strong national network of folks who have worked with him on these issues who have succesfully run for office advising him. He has national legislative experience.
He is a long time active member of one of the city's and certainly your district's most powerful political organizations, the Black Clergy. Beyond that he speaks forcefully about the cost of cronyism under Miller and waste in terms of distributing social services to 120 different CDC's instead of pooling resources to get the most "bang" for the taxpayer's buck. He "gets" economic development on Germantown Ave. He "gets" putting services where the community needs them, not where he can give a job to a political ally. If you guys wanted to actually beat Miller you would put your resource behind him. |
