The Maplewood Mall was constructed in the middle 1970's in an attempt to help make central Germantown a more appealing place to shop. The idea was that because that block of Maplewood was so quaint architecturally, it would be a good place to help bolster the more busy atmosphere of Chelten Avenue nearby. I would imagine that the City had something to do with planning and implementing the Mall, but I would also wager that the Central Germantown Business Association was part of it. Perhaps I have that organization's name wrong, but I am thinking of the organization that people often malign these days for having produced so little positive change despite so much funding.
It's amazingly clear, as I am sure you've noticed, that maintenance is at best, deferred on Maplewood Mall. The tenant list kiosk on the corner with the Avenue is a symbol of the lack of interest and maintenance there. It is very sad to see since it could be such a pleasant space.
This is all part of the urgent need that Downtown Germantown has for a sweeping restoration.
