Default Any other anti-car people here?

I just wanted to say in reponse to the poll that I don't own a car and don't drive at all. I really don't want to. I think I am saving a lot of money by not owning one. I basically walk or take the train or bus for everything.

I even walk into center city from my house at least once a week, which takes about an hour. I sometimes do it on the way back to my house too. Having a car must be highly convenient, but I think that for a walker/irresposible person/hater of clunky metal objects like myself, it would be a battle to own a car.

Anyone else like me?

let us not forget that CAFE standards were originally passed to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. on top of that, they were relaxed right from the beginning as domestic carmakers failed to meet them every year. people just weren't buying small cars...until gas hit almost $2/gal(inflation adjusted). then the japanese cars poured in and smaller cars were easier to sell. essentially, metal was traded for plastic to lighten cars. i guess my point is, demand is the real driver here not the car co's. pickups, of course, are exempt b/c it would hit america where it hurt...the small biz man and do it yourselfer. times will change. they are already are.

But the fines imposed on the car manufactures who aren't meeting the CAFE standards would raise the price of all of the trucks which weren't meeting these standards. As the prices went up the purchases would go down.

Lets not forget that most Hondas and Toyotas on the road today were built in the midwest and south. It is hard to say what is a foreign and what is a domestic car anymore.

what I meant was, in regards to pickups, the price of pickups is politically sensitive. SUV's are more of a luxury item. in the midwest and in PA, in poorer areas everyone has at least one pickup. SUV's are for wealthier suburbs,

I assume it's not within walking distance of the R7 stop?

Getting down the shore would be really hard

My car is an absolute necessity...even if I didn't have to go meet clients...I am selfish and impatient...waiting for a bus to go home to see the folks in Joisey would be awful. Taking the bus to go food shopping wouldn't be fun either. Trying to get to my sister's house out in the burbs would require me to take a train out there and get picked up.

I like having as much control over my schedule as humanly possible, so I am going to keep my car.

Not even close. And waiting for the train after a twelve to fourteen hour day ain't no picnic. THat's what I did before car, many years ago.

I read an article not too long ago in Bicycling Magazine about the commuter trains in San Francisco have cars dedicated/designed solely for passengers with bikes(even during peak hours). If we had a system similar to this, you could work anywhere within 5 miles of a RR station, with no need for a car or even a bus transfer. If they did that, just about anywhere in the entire metro area would be accesible.

for those of us for whom its most applicable, you can bring bikes on at rush hour because it's off peak (reverse commuters). However, if everyone did it, it would require w cars. I would be happy if some fo the stations had bike lockers too. Still, the weather isn't CA and more so, many stations, like neshaminy on the R3, are downright dangerous to bike from to corp parks. Great Valley too. whenever they finish that chester valley trail it will be easy to ride from norristown out there.
