Alrighty, then! Between that and a slice from Marra's, my weekend plans are set! Steco has promised me dinner and a movie at the Riverview even though he doesn't put out on the 1st date. A Marra's slice sounds perfect.

Just a note. John's is frequently closed on the weekends, particularly recently with the proprietor's illness. I haven't been down there for quite a while--I hope he's doing ok.

I was going to school in New York in the early 1990s. The place was a scary dangerous and dirty hell hole. They really cleaned it up.
I really find it disheartning that Philadelphia has surpassed how New York was then. I did volunteer work in the South Bronx then and it wasn't as bad as parts of North Philadelphia are now. There are parts of North Philadelphia that look like post Katrina New Orleans. When I go to New York now it is a totally different place than it was when I was going to school there. It is an incredible transformation. Why can't Philadelphia do the same? Is has to be the scum that is infesting City Hall like a toxic mold. What changed New York was Rudy Giuliani. I didn't approve of his politics, but he came in and kicked some asses that needed kicking. Here in Philadelphia we get mayors who come in and kiss some asses that need kicking. When is the city going to stand up and say I am mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore? How many people will have to die needless deaths? How many school children will have to go to poor schools? Maybe the best thing to do is apply the Ben Tre logic to the city. Sometimes we have to destroy the village to save it. This may be one of those times. Keep Philadelphia as a county, but have individual municipalities. Or have the state take over, as was done in Camden. Ineffectual mayors like Nutjob aren't going to do anything but rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic. It may be time to embrace the iceberg. Until Philadelphia gets its own Rudy Giuliani, the city is basically doomed.i |

Board of Ed was his tough nut to crack, but they both compromised eventually, and the school system is much, much better. Zero tolerance for school violence (sending problem kids to specialized programs or annexed schools allowed the majority of kids to begin learning). Infrastructure was another biggie for the mayor. He championed the cause with the state and fought for the money to fix the system. Yes, Mayor Nutter, I feel, is being held back from his efforts, but I think most of the problems originate and end in Harrisburg. |

Also recommend Venuto's on the 500 block of South, regardless of it being a chain. |

Give Philadelphia all of the excess tax revenue that Manhattan gives to NYC. NYC is 4 Philadelphia's carried on Wall Street's back. (and add the control of it's state capitol which we also don't have)
