R. Santorum. comments today were unwarranted. By injecting the word jihad into them he attempts to imply our Mayor is a terrorist.
RS preaches about how over the past 50 years social crimes and other problems have increased while ignoring the fact that 15 of those years were under his watch and during his active participation in government (from 1981-2006). As a former lawmaker sworn to uphold the Constitution, R.S. ignores the Supreme Court’s Decision that no Government may directly or indirectly finance an organization that discriminates. He chastises the city because the scouts built & maintained their current headquarters while ignoring the fact before it was even built they had signed a contract giving the building to the City upon completion. For a building and lot located in Center City, which encompasses a city block on all four sides, the City insists on a mere $200,000; yet RS castigates us while ignoring the fact that rental for a comparible property would be in excess of five times that amount. No mention has been made of the Public Utilities provided by the City. While acknowledging the vast majority of young men who commit crimes are without fathers or male role models RS ignores the fact that in the neighborhoods so affected the Scouting presence is minimal at best. The Scouts choose instead to promote their in-school do-nothing program just to inflate their membership statistics. RS then under the guise of political advice threatens us with future governmental recriminations while ignoring the fact Pennsylvanians ended his political career because of his do-nothing, holier-than-thou, sanctimonious ramblings. RS was defeated 59% to 41% in the last race of his political career. This was the largest margin of defeat for an incumbent Senator since 1980 and the worst defeat for an incumbent Senator since Pennsylvania began direct senate election in 1918. RS being a Republican from Pittsburgh seems to have forgotten we in Philadelphia, for the most part being Democrats, didn’t ask for nor do we want your opinion Our Mayor; Michael Nutter a man who knows and practices family values, who has dedicated himself to the betterment of Philadelphia throughout his long-serving political career will continue to abide by the Constitution and the decision of the Supreme Court in the fairest manner he has found. The rental and cost of re-locating to another headquarters would far exceed the pittance Mayor Nutter has requested in his quest to abide by the Laws of this Country while still supporting an organization that has in the past and will in future be of benefit to some of the growing young men of our community. If the Scouts desire to expend time, money, and volunteers in legal manuverings to fight the very Laws they purport to support, they might find bad publicity may continue to show their deficiencies and may ultimately cost them the millions in Federal Grants given them annually. Quote:
In case you haven't noticed, Nutter has ignored the State Constitution, City Charter and State Supreme court several times already, so it isn't like he isn't want to do it when he sees fit. Second, "us Philadelphians" did ask for his opinion. The Inquirer is paying him for his column. Third, yes the Boy Scouts agreed to give the building to the City, but the City also agreed to never charge rent. You could say breaking one deal breaks the other. |

Cradle of Liberty Council member John Braxton, a retired judge and former Eagle Scout, said the Scouts can't afford the steep rent increase. He said the Scouts' policy on gays is "don't ask, don't tell."
"I have known persons who have been gay within our scouting program," Braxton said. "We never ran them out. They're Eagle scouts, they're achievers, and what they do in their personal sexual life is not an issue within their scouting life," he said. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,314570,00.html |
