I've been criticized on here by the liberal elite for making statements that Philly is worse than Baghdad. They are against the war in Iraq and will feign horror and dismay at the death of our brave soldiers simply to support their political agenda. But the irony of it all is that they are living in Philadelphia. I'd like to see them show the same horror and dismay over the death of Beau Zabel.
Basically, if you are living Philadelphia voluntary, you can't make criticisms of the war in Iraq. First off I will say it again. PHilly could be a good town , most certainly a better one if politicians and people cared more to take more action and If the news whores every promoted better changes. it takes an outsider to give them a grasp of reality If you or I suggest the same things we are nuts.. They want their action news to tell them none of what is really happening. The news in this town are whores for the wealthy . They could promote better leaders and ask questions that might ask for better changed but they are as heartless as our politicians. They pump up whatever they can while selling you meds for everything they ignore that is bad. . You might flea Philly as did many sane people before. There will be others more dysfunctional who either didn't know or more dysfunctional who will come to take your place. They not only accept the same things as before they will mirror people doing the wrong things Who else would want to live here? You either have to be an immigrant, someone who never reads anything, or a criminal to want to live here now. or too poor to leave. This is exactly why I and other are fleeing this city in droves. It's the tolerance of such behavior that made me realize that nothing is ever going to change. Living in the Filty allowed me to witness first hand why liberal policies are such miserable failures when applied to a population over 10 people. Most of those wine-drinking, Gruyere eating diners probably are themselves the typical wealthy liberal and felt bad for the guy. Meanwhile, their city has become the laughingstock of the nation. Hello ? ? Many across the nation know all this already. I come here for therapy. I am shocked there even is a group of ten who defend Philly without any facts. All they do is call people nuts . Their reality is so flawed that seriously I think they need to donate to psychiatric institutions their brain chemcials in order to market acceptance of insane things . But the sadder part is many people can't afford to leave this craziness. They will be stuck here watching who shot who, f rated air , and the news stations asking no hard questions while the people turn even more dysfunctional and blame their neighbors instead of the politicians or their newsmedia. You watch. Excellent article all around. I love how it completely debunked the myth that poverty and education are the ONLY explanations behind crime.[/quote] Last edited by packers2 : 07-05-2008 at 10:44 PM. |

The National Review has an agenda, and it is more than willing to sacrifice Philadelphia on the altar of its agenda. I found the article to be very point-of-view. If I only read the article and didn't know any better, I would think that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are looked up to as leaders in Philadelphia. In fact, they are scorned. That is why we have produced squeaky clean people like Will Smith and Boys II Men, and ballsy, truth-speaking leaders like Bill Cosby. There is certainly a lunatic fringe, and you can hear it if you listen to Mary Mason, but I don't see it on City Council, generally - especially since Rick Mariano went to the Big House.

The article seems to be quite truthful and hits the nail on the head.
It is probably not possible given the corrupt and entrenched political apparatus for change to come about, but perhaps getting some business leader who is not beholdent to them to run for mayor. Perhaps a Camden style state takeover would be needed. Get law enforcement officers from outside the city come in. The State Police have a better esprit de corps than the PPD and frankly would be more intimidating. Maybe something as simple as changing the uniforms to something a bit more forceful than baby blue would work. I'd go with something like the LAPD uses since it evokes a professional almost paramilitary force instead of something that looks like it may be a bowling shirt. Take things that work and implement them. The fixing broken windows theory of George Kelling worked incredibly well when put into practice. Having a zero tolerance policy for quality of life offenses works and it also leads to the capture of people wanted for other crimes. The LAPD has some good techniques for dealing with violent crime too. |

There is no real progress with violent crime till you fix the problem with overcrowding in the jails and the overburdened trial system. That means finding solution like drug court for those it works for so we have more room for those that need to be there. "Zero tolerance on quality of life offenses" would be worse for the city's bottom line than doubling city worker's retirement benefits. We are going broke incarcerating too many of the wrong kind of people - the mentally ill and drug addicted and destitute that respond better to other kinds alternative sentences with built into the process. We are not holding onto and keeping tabs on violent offenders. We also need to step up enforcement against people carrying illegal guns and straw purchasers. We also need to stop underfunding parole and reentry so that those that do come out don't slip through the cracks and back into the old ways. I also support the idea that a condition of parole or probation is submitting to searches for illegal guns.
The author of this story whining about "The Screaming Guy" just shows that he is far worse of a yuppie whiner than the diners he seeks to make fun of. Philly has serious problems but that has nothing to do with the solutions we need.
