I can remember center City being quite sleepy in the early nineties, so I can only imagine how quiet it was in the eighties. I do recall when I moved here in 1994, that Rittenhouse Square was definitely not the square you see today. The only "excitement" was Houlihan's where Devon Seafood is located now and Rouge's space contained a wine shop.
In 1994, Marabella's was still hoppin' in Academy house (what was the big deal with roasted red peppers in olive oil??) and Pleasant Peasant (where I worked it's entire run - Oct 94 to Oct 96) had just taken over the space that HA Winston's once inhabited on the southwest corner of 15th and Locust. Bassetts was still on the other corner and there was an empty bank where Cosi is now. Magnolia Cafe was where Tequila's is located. Who can still remember the mardi gras beads in the tree out front? We even had a Thomas Moser Furniture showroom in Banana Republic's spot. ok, Im getting away from the eighties. Back to the original thread..... |

I don't know if I would assume the early 80's were necessarily sleepier than the early 90's. They may have been financially sleepier, but I can only dream of hitting the post-disco early 80's night club scene in any city. Maybe I'm glorifying the past but I feel like I've seen the excitement of city life fade from the ealy 90's to today, I would assume that the 70's and 80's were even more exciting. From what I've heard, it seemed like much more of a do-anything kind of town. Then again, I find the grit and the seediness found in the dirty corner pubs a lot more exciting than the safety of the upscale restaurants and rows of boutiques.

The Del Ave club scene began in 1991/1992 with Philly Rock Cafe, Katmandu, Aztec, Beach Club, Eli's Pier, and Rock Lobster. All of the locations except Katmandu (Cav RiverDeck) are no longer even standing.
