Hi hr, do you think the air is bad here?
![]() I called the air quality control people quite a few times. I don't know what they were burning last year but I became literally sick because of it and my throat was raw, my sinuses hurt, upset stomach and all the doors and windows were closed in my house. It took them awhile to find it, to stop it and I haven't smelled it for awhile but it was horrible and I couldn't believe they got away with it for as long as they did. |

I'm really confused at this point. I post a ranking and everyone takes it upon themselves to attack me as though I was the one who came up with the rankings. What is your fascination with me? The topic of this thread is "Philadelphia ranked one of the worst places to raise a family". I don't see how posts about me are relevant to this topic.
FYI, most of the posts on PhillyBlog are negative due to the current condition of the city. I'd be happy to post positive things about the city, but I'm not going to just make stuff up. Let's face it: a lot of stuff going on the city right now is very, very negative. As soon as something positive happens, I'll be the first to post it. |

I have always considered Philadelphia's weakness to be precisely that it is a great place to be FROM. In other words, to me Philly is a great place to raise a family. Great schools (private in the city, supposedly public in the suburbs). Come on now, very few cities can compete with our Interac League. Great housing stock, and cheap, too. Great neighborhoods, great access to parks and culture. Access to the mountains, the shore, and gazillions of connections in our very accessible airport. Great public transport in the Regional Rail system. Cheap property taxes, to boot. There's a reason there is a legend in New York that you can live like a human being in Philly and raise a family, all while enjoying your life. The odd thing about Philly is that we have an abundance of the dispossessed, and they skew our numbers. Very few of here on this blog are dispossessed. A surprising number of the dispossessed go on to become citizens, but too many of them just end up being burdens on society. They, however, have only the most tangential effect on the lives of people with choices. If you choose to you can live very comfortably in Philly and have very few interactions with the underclass, and most of the 'nice' neighborhoods are quite removed from that group of people who skew the numbers. If Philadelphia were defined as the original city from 1684 to 1854, we would rank very high indeed. Besides, in my opinion Philly's plethora of lower class people, while making us look very bad statistically in relation to cities like Portland or Seattle, are precisely the reason a city like Portland (the City of Roses, give me a break, 'barf') can't hold a candle to Philly - this is such a font of the music and culture which has made America the cultural leader of the world to this day. Billy Holliday, John Coltrane, Will Smith, Bill Cosby, the Philly Sound (I'll even cheat and bring in some blue-eyed soul: Hall & Oates). These are the people who keep Philly relevant, not some bloodless yuppies in Fairmount who would be just as happy in the Pacific Northwest. That is the target market of that 'report'.
