Because there will be people who will- whether on this forum or not- suggest such a thing. It's a variabble that will be hard to ignore.

I mean, it's obvious that people see things differently; to ignore that is unjust. I'm not saying for one bit that this hints racism, but there will be people that will conclude that and fact, feel me?

You're such a smart guy, what additional training do they need? MORE sensitivity training? How about Mom, who whined on tv about how they shouldn't do that to a 'teenager', knows where the hell her teenager is at night, instead of him being a suspect in a shooting of three other people! Stop making apologies. Read the NYT article about the doctor in Chicago who is treating violence epidemiologically, and see if you can't be more instrumental in that way, instead of trying to stir the pot.


And you know what, who cares? Really, at this point, who cares. This violence is a nasty virus that is spreading rapidly and needs to be contained in some way. It may actually be more helpful if people would be less inclined to throw the "R" word around, since it is far less about the "R" than it is about a problem.

It is tough to tell whether they were resisting; but I've watched the video a couple of times, and it appears as though it took the cops a couple of efforts to pull each of the individuals out of the car and that at least two of them continued to struggle while being pulled out. Does that justify kicking them repeatedly? It would be easy for me (and the rest of us) to say, "no". But we're not in the position of making the split-second decision about whether a suspect poses an immediate threat or not. People forget how quickly officers must make decisions and how quickly they must act once the decision's been made.

Very true. And it's important to think about this from the cops' perspective as well.

I suppose I'm in agreement with a number of the other posters in cutting the police some slack in light of recent events. If that makes me a bad person, I'm willing to deal with that guilt.

At some point, the law-abiding citizens of this city need to find a way of making clear that criminal laws are not [EDIT: meant to be] obeyed solely by victims. Is putative police brutality an effective way of sending that message? Of course not. But as between spending my energy defending criminal suspects and defending criminal victims, I'm going to pour my energies more into the latter. After all, at least criminal suspects have some control over their fate (i.e., don't commit any crimes and, if you are suspected of having done so, don't resist being arrested); victims are often not so lucky.
