Didn't there used to be a number of "platforms."

I seem to remember that there was s Stauffer's restaurant at the top of Centre Square. And Wyndham Hotel had a restaurant on the top floor - it's just a catering hall now.

And there used to be a restaurant at around the 35th floor of the Bell Atlantic building. It was originally an in-house eating spot for building tenants - then opened to the public in the mid ninties. Think it's closed.

It would be nice if they opened the Pyramid Club (Mellon Bank Building) up to the public. Fifty stories up. Should be the best view of all.

Cingular? That may have been a typo or you may have just hit on something there. The costs of construction will be covered by building it as the mother of all cell phone transmission towers, with or without naming rights. Of course the shaft and platform will need a bit of shielding, so as not to fry or sterilize the tourists. %-)

I've always thought of Philadelphia as a very practical, genuine city that shouldn't need to embark on a somewhat frivolous project like this.

You want a Landmark? Here are two ideas for Landmarks.

1. Tear down all buildings over about 400 feet tall except City Hall. City Hall will again be a Landmark.

2. Build a concrete drydock in midchannel of the Delaware River a bit south of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Then tow the SS United States to that drydock to sit for-ever-more in the middle of the river. Perhaps there could be cable car access to the ship, it could be turned into a hotel, or perhaps it can become one of those accursed casinos that is coming our way.

Not to change the topic, but "many of the workers" is actually "all of the workers". From what I understand, Penn Mutual only receives mail there.

I'm sure this view of P'burgh is lovely, but the that list is a joke. I've been to Sedona and it's butt-ugly.

For aesthetics, we need our own Mulholland Drive. Let the mayor go crazy with NTI, then build some big hills with all the rubble in North Philly, then put a windy road across the top.

For tourists, how about if we put a roller coaster on top of One and Two Liberty Place? And a bungee jump off of the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Choked on my coffee over this one. Thanks for the AM laugh.

To chime in, after a few years of living here, I still think City Hall is a landmark. Walking in Old City and Society Hill is like one big landmark. For history and pure bulk of it, you cannot get better than this city.

As a barometer of cheese, I generally use my home area. In Buffalo, they wanted to build a landmark bridge to bring people back to the area. Short of global warming, I don't think anything will bring people back to Buffalo. We don't need this type of shtick to bring people to Philly. I agree we just need to work on the basics.

If we're going to build a big phallus, let's do it Olde Philadelphia style. Just imagine a 100 story tower, all red brick, with shutters, windowboxes, fanlights, and all the other federal/georgian touches.
