Default Philly sales tax question

I bought an item online from brookstone.com, and I think I was charged too much for the tax.

The item was $50.00. I was charged $4.27 sales tax + $10.99 shipping and handling.

The tax works out to be 8.54%. I thought the Philly tax rate was 7%?

Any thoughts?

PS - I ended up returning the item to a Brookstone store (outside of Philly) and they had to use a special tax code to get me the proper amount back.

By the numbers, you were taxed on the shipping and handling. I didn't know they did that, but then again, I never paid much attention to it.

Yes, shipping and handling are taxable in many states.
