Apparently, nearly no one on this board cares about the crime rate much any more, either. With all of the sabre-rattling last year and the waiting for the inauguration and new Police Commissioner, and the declaration of the crime emergency, you would think that the fact that the "plan" was unveiled today would have garnered more attention.

No one cares because the homicide rate is much lower this year. Hell the way it looks now if we have the same trends that we did from last year from April to December. We'll have that 100 less murders. **** we could just have Sly Johnson back as our commish come this Spring and see a sizeable decrease!

This is directly from the blog:

"Murders in Philadelphia as of 11:59 pm, January 24th:
2006: 22
2007: 27
2008: 18
The year is young, but that’s a 33% decline over last year and a 19% decline against 2006."
Thanks for reading malcolmxpark.org! The numbers come directly from the Philadelphia Police Department and are accurate to midnight the night before they are reported. The Inquirer has elected not to continue the "murder box" in 2008. It could be found most days last year on the front page of the local section. If you look through our coverage from last year (see the link above), you'll see that we consistently reported that the numbers were a little better than all the "crisis" talk warranted. The trend appears to be continuing this year. Let's hope it does...

Okay I know towels aren't know for their brains but LOOK AT THE SAME STATS FOR LAST YEAR!!! IT WAS A MUCH COLDER JANUARY TOO! January to March of last year was worse then June to August so much for the cold weather angle.

to towelhed,

I forgot to mention mormons like you will at the end of the year say "Yeah so the murder rate is down by 25%, thats only because it was the eighth year in the decade. Wait till it gets to be '09 and everyone gets really crazy."

again.

Yup. None of us will ever know what makes a human.....

The numbers won't ever make sense...But at lease we can do something to get them to move up or down.

As of today it's still the stats as of 1/24, looks like an update is in order. So much for your 33% decline and looks like an increase over '06 if those posted numbers are right. This from the same site gives slightly different numbers. What gives or are the previous years the same as of 1/24 too?

Remember, each number cited represents the exact same period of time. Those were all the numbers for January 24th in each year, not the numbers for the entire month of January. The new numbers are up this morning, and they're showing a 22% decline over January 2007. So again, to clarify, each of the numbers in the chart represents all of the murders for the entire month of January in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
