Default What's it take to get a rooftop deck construction permit?

Hi,
I'm a new homeowner leaving near south street and 27th Street and I was looking to build a rooftop deck on top of my 2 story rowhome. Does anyone have any experience doing this in regards to city permits, reliable contractors, advice on how to more permanently protect the roof before a deck is built over it? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Don't know about all that, but I'm pretty sure you'll also need a zoning variance and that will probably mean getting the signatures of all your immediate neighbors to prove to the Zoning Board that no-one objects to the deck. At least, that's what typically happens in Fairmount.

Hi Soso -I'm a couple blocks south of you and I would love to hear your about experience once you get the roof deck completed as we are in the boat. The only thing I can tell you is you will have to go in front of SOSNA to make sure no one in the neighborhood objects. (I have yet to see anyone object to a roof deck at the meetings.) Not sure if this is true or not but I heard, at least for our neighborhood, all Zoning Permits are initially turned down by the Zoning Board.

What happens in Fishtown is that you build it and enjoy it. Permit? What? Sure, they're probably required but whole houses are seemingly build by unlicensed contractors or without building permits. However, it's probably easier to obtain one from the city first--if some neighbor rats you out.

I was once told by a priest "It is easier to ask forgivness, than to ask for permission." Go in Peace!
