If cops were the only ones with guns, the crook in this story might have gotten away with it, or worse.

If gov't could figure out some magical solution that would actually result in a situation where only cops had guns, I might be OK with that.

Until fairy tales come true, there's not the slightest possibility that only cops will have guns with the current push for "gun control" being about little more than disarming the law abiding.

I don't feel a gun is good protection against the cops though. No matter what the circumstances, use a gun to defend yourself against a cop, drunk or flipped out or whatnot, and the "system" will still crush you like a bug. This cop broke the law and should be treated as the criminal he is. Step one should be to take his guns (and his badge) away. Watch what actually happens to him though.

It's not like most of the homicides are committed with illegal weapons.

Legal guns aren't a problem.

So no.. we should let everyone have them. (who should legally have or want them)

I can but don't have any.

I don't feel the need to own a gun. I don't care if anyone else does. I just think it's not safe to have a gun in my home.

I'm with J.A.B. here: Don't like guns? Don't buy one!

However: I don't see how a requirement to report lost or stolen guns would hurt law-abiding gun owners, and I think something needs to be done to stanch the flow of illegal weapons into the streets and our most violent neighborhoods. Whether that's tighter licensing requirements for gun dealers, instant background checks, one-a-month handgun purchase limits, stricter policing of purchases at gun shows, or something else, I'm open to persuasion on.

There defiantly should be some kind of limit on the amount you can buy within a certain amount of time.

It occurred to me earlier today that yet again gov't is ignoring the felons.

How about a program where if you get caught in the illegal possession of a gun you get 10 years mandatory minimum. Then we no longer need to worry as much about was it a straw buy, one gun a month, was it stolen, was it reported, was it this or that or the other. Focus on the act of illegal possession (which is what we are really concerned about but which has been all but ignored by the law), discourage that conduct sufficiently, and we may not have to worry as much about where the illegal gun exactly came from.

Any idea what someone gets for illegal gun possession right now? If you guessed probation (generally) you'd be right. That's right. With Rendell, Street and Johnson all crying and wheezing for years about illegal guns and the gun problem, Philly's gun court gives illegal gun possessors probation. Does that make any sense to anyone?
