If cops were the only ones with guns, the crook in this story might have gotten away with it, or worse.

I don't feel the need to own a gun. I don't care if anyone else does. I just think it's not safe to have a gun in my home.

I'm with J.A.B. here: Don't like guns? Don't buy one!
However: I don't see how a requirement to report lost or stolen guns would hurt law-abiding gun owners, and I think something needs to be done to stanch the flow of illegal weapons into the streets and our most violent neighborhoods. Whether that's tighter licensing requirements for gun dealers, instant background checks, one-a-month handgun purchase limits, stricter policing of purchases at gun shows, or something else, I'm open to persuasion on.

There defiantly should be some kind of limit on the amount you can buy within a certain amount of time.

Quote:
How about a program where if you get caught in the illegal possession of a gun you get 10 years mandatory minimum. Then we no longer need to worry as much about was it a straw buy, one gun a month, was it stolen, was it reported, was it this or that or the other. Focus on the act of illegal possession (which is what we are really concerned about but which has been all but ignored by the law), discourage that conduct sufficiently, and we may not have to worry as much about where the illegal gun exactly came from. Any idea what someone gets for illegal gun possession right now? If you guessed probation (generally) you'd be right. That's right. With Rendell, Street and Johnson all crying and wheezing for years about illegal guns and the gun problem, Philly's gun court gives illegal gun possessors probation. Does that make any sense to anyone?
