14 less than last year. more than 3 1/2 times per capita the rate for New York. Too high.

So, that means that for six of Street's eight years in office, the murder total was under 400? Isn't that the inverse of Rendell's eight years?

But, yes, the murder rate is still unacceptably high, regardless.

Meanwhile, Philly got its first murder victim of 2008 on January 2nd. And the new tally begins... at least this wasn't a "gun crime."

Man, 55, fatally stabbed near home in S.W. Phila.

The city's first reported homicide of 2008 occurred about 3 a.m. yesterday in Southwest Philadelphia, police said.
Officers called to the 2000 block of South 67th Street found a man lying on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania at 3:30 a.m. Police did not release the 55-year-old victim's identity pending notification of relatives. Another man stabbed him during an altercation that began at the victim's residence and ended several doors away, police said. An investigation was continuing. - Kathleen Brady Shea

Oh God it began already. I was hoping against hope that this year would be a better year, less crime etc... but so far nothing. Who wants to guess how many murders we will have this year? My prediction is 405.

hmm the one in the article I posted also talks about the murder occuring at 3am.... may be we're talking about the same murder.

See, half the time Philadelphians must be doubling on the murder rate in their mind due to saturation media coverage! Its really not that bad.

ok, it is.
