30,000 gallons seemed like a very small number considering the ship held 450 times that amount of oil (reportedly 13,500,000 was the capacity), and it was tilted to its side in the picture in the Inquirer Sunday morning.

I knew the number would go higher - I hope it isn't as bad as it looks.

Yup - but the ship's engineer said "blah, blah, blah, blah."

So why didn't reporters double check - rather than accepting the company spokespeople's words. Lazy. Lazy. Lazy.

They'll probably say "we would have done better if it hadn't been for the holiday!"

And now, this gem, tucked away in the middle of the story.

Quote:
The oil sheen reached within three miles of drinking-water intakes for South Jersey and Philadelphia.

The drinking water is not currently threatened, but precautions are being taken, Bradley Campbell, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, said yesterday. Officials are testing the drinking water regularly.
Oh good, they're gonna test the water.

If this gets into the intake, it will badly foul up the water treatment facilities.

A friend of mine made a good point about the spill. He said "Where are the liberals now?"

Where are all the environmentally-conscious Democrats that came to Philadelphia and to Pennsylvania and to NJ to stump for their party? What about the city's legion of Democrats? Don't they care about the spill, and it's effect on the environment? Is Bob Brady going to bring home some money for the city to help with the cleanup?

I wonder what the economic cost (lost business, lost wages) has been.

While I care about the ducks and geese (well, maybe not the damn geese), no one seems to write about these economic costs. I guess they just don't make as good TV as the poor, wretched duck covered with goo.

Also, imagine if you will, the befouling of Heinz Park, which is a major refuge on the flyway. The oil will be there for several years.

They had a thing on CNN on Monday or Tuesday that mentioned daily losses near a million dollars due to held up ship traffic, ship rerouting, etc. Does Citgo (that's who the oil was for, right?) really bring so much money into the city that City Hall isn't up in arms over this?

Default Lost Propeller cause of the spill?

WPVI Channel 6 News is now reporting that a lost propeller may be the cause of the large gash in the side of the vessel that caused the leak:
Quote:
Nobody is sure what caused the 2 holes on the tanker from which the oil flowed, but Action News has learned of one possibility that is being examined.

In April, a dredging ship used by the Army Corps of Engineers lost a 23-foot diameter propeller while working in the Delaware River. It was never found.

I saw that last night.

The arrogance of the Corps of Engineers. Probably still po'd that people didn't want them dredging in the first place.

Oh, we dropped a 23-foot propeller. Who cares. Wonder what that prop cost the taxpayers?

Still, I have questions about whether it would have to end up on-end for it to slice the bottom of this tanker. And I just have lots of problems with the claim that they didn't know they had hit something - hit something hard enough to put two slices in the bottom.

ALSO:

from today's Inquirer:
Quote:
In Europe, such tankers are banned from certain sensitive waters - in favor of their double-hulled brethren - as a result of a severe spill in 2002 off the coast of Spain.

But in the United States, the single-hulled ships will be allowed to operate as late as 2015, courtesy of federal law.
ALSO:
Quote:
For oil tankers above 3,000 gross tons, U.S. law limits the owner's liability to $1,200 per ton or $10 million, whichever is greater. According to Coast Guard records, the Athos I weighs 37,895 gross tons, which would mean a liability limit of about $45 million. That law was passed in 1990 in response to the far larger Exxon Valdez spill in 1989.
Which probably means we (as taxpayers) are going to get stuck with lots of the bill for this.

Corzine and Lautenberg have proposed removing this limit which may have been enough in 1990. But the cost of this spill will run well past it.

Also, Maya van Rossum of the Delaware Riverkeeper's Office has suggested that single hull tankers be banned from the Delaware.

I agree. If they can do it in Europe, we can do it here.

Default single hulled ships

Unbelievable!!!!!! I still don't believe that we still have single hulled ships. In the Navy, we have double hulled ships. The space in between is for stability and just in case we have a leaking tank. Just pitiful!!!!!
