We've had illegal pay raises, state takeovers over the schools that hand delivered contracts to one of the worst for-profit school operators - Edison - and underdelivered in terms of funding, the PPA which gets bigger and bigger in terms of patronage but doesn't deliver the money they promised to the schools. The people we send to Harrisburg are not serving us on a number of different levels. To be clear I'm not anti-casino. I'm jut appalled at the process they were put through with. There was other ways to get casinos to Philadelphia without doing what they did.
First of all, the locations are horrible. Traffic is bad. There is plenty of cheap brownfield land that is just west of FDR Park. The streets could be extended past the park and the old grain elevator that is near the Girard Point Bridge could be imploded and make way for a large casino. And the state could have passed an exemption for Philadelphia to get casinos with table games, which would get more support in the city than big metal box slots barns like you have in Chester. Philadelphians want a Borgata in the City because it would bring high end jobs and amenities that actually improve life here and provide many more jobs than slots barns do. Slots barns are traffic accumulators and an eyesore.

A: No. Q: Did Fumo and Evans run for office on a pro-casino ticket? A: No. Nobody in Philadelphia or Pennsylvania voted for anyone who ran for office on a pro-casino ticket. They all pulled it out of their hats after they were elected. What's that? Don't vote for anyone because they might turn around and screw you.

More state stuff: taxpayer funded partisan polling, PHEA, "bonuses" for Senate staffers campaigning on the taxpayers dime, the inability to actually pass a sunshine law that makes us competitive with other states in terms of transparency in government.
People should really look at who runs in primaries next spring for state offices. |

I normally wouldn't jump in here but this is just factually incorrect. Rendell DID run on a pro-casino platform in 02. In fact, he was quite open about it. The mantra was property tax relief and that's how it was going to be delivered. You can argue about the methodology of how it was passed all you want (personally I wasn't surprised as it was in keeping with the way government typically operates in PA), but if you're suggesting that Rendell only dreamed this up after election, you simply weren't paying attention at the time. Back to the shadows.... |
