Mayor Street to teach at Temple next year
Temple University President Ann Weaver Hart announced today that Mayor John F. Street will teach two undergraduate courses on urban politics and policy in the department of political science during the spring term beginning in January 2008.
"We are delighted that Mayor Street has offered to share his deep experience and acknowledged expertise in urban politics and policy with our students," Hart said. "His participation will add another dimension to a political science department that has been nationally recognized for providing students with rigorous public service internships and opportunities for hands-on learning in community service.
"We also welcome him as a former teacher who knows the classroom and as a neighbor who understands the strength and diversity of our students and faculty, the uniqueness of our urban mission, and the intellectual and social vibrancy of our campus."
A 1975 graduate of Temple's Beasley School of Law, the mayor has long lived within walking distance of the university's main campus in North Philadelphia. His son Ahkeem is a Temple undergraduate; another son, Leteef, earned a master's degree in education from Temple; and his daughter Rashida Ng teaches in the architecture program at the university's Tyler School of Art.

Should be called "How to eff up a city".

No more tuition money for them!

This reminds me of when I lived in DC and Marion Barry threatened to run for Mayor again. George Washington Uniersity and Georgetown got together and offered him a half a million dollars a year rotating professorship on the condition he not run. He ended up not running but I can't recall if he took the post.

Lesson 1: Crappy urban renewal efforts
this will involve a short field trip 5 blocks east and west of the campus

I don't think he did. He did get elected as a District Councilmember, though.

This is just too ridiculous and sublime to even comment on.

As incredibly unappealing a concept as this is, if he were to move to my district he would in fact be a slight increase in competence over the wicked witch of the West.

I don't like Blackwell either and would love to see her go, but I don't think this is true. Barry was corrupt, on drugs and under him the city was so poorly managed that the federal government had to come in and take over. By the end of his term the only thing he had control over was tourism. He was an abysmmal failure, perhaps the worse mayor in the history of this country. What ammazes me is how much that city has changed for the better since he left, a testament to how good management can triumph. It actually gives me hope for this city with Nutter coming on board.

As to the original post, though i think Street was a total failure as mayor, I do think that he is an intelligent man and certainly understands the intricacies of city politics. Taking this class from him would probably be a valuable learning exerience.

I thought it was clear in my post I meant John Street not Marion Barry. Still very, very unlikely but not quite in the realm of the surreal as Marion Barry. It seems like despite working closely in the past, Street and Jannie are far from close these days.

You mentioned an ex-mayor returning as a district council person. I doubt Street would run against his ex-chief of staff Clarke, but he could actually win against Jannie - though I seriously doubt he would try it.
