Dear Friends-
I recently volunteered to reorganize the General Discussion thread. I moved about 275 messages from the thread that should have been placed elsewhere. The most common threads moved were things that should have been posted in "Ask a Phillyfriend," or "The Lounge." "Events," "Culture," and "Getting Around Philly" were runners up. A few requests: First Great minds think alike. Before you start a new thread, please do a quick search to make sure it doesn't already exist here or in another forum. http://phillyblog.com/forum/search.php :clapping: Second The General Discussion is supposed to be about Philly-related items that don't have a specific home elsewhere. If you want some specific information about the town, neighborhood, or a recommendation for a service, etc., please post it elsewhere. Also, if you think that some issues -Tech Philly, Philly Parents, or [Insert Neighborhood Here] deserve a place - post it in the suggestion box. Third While we all appreciate humorous subject titles, please try to make the subject as informative as possible. Finally ... If you are looking for a topic or your post that you suspect may have been moved ... look here first: http://phillyblog.com/forum/search.p...ch_id=newposts Thanks for your help. bga

I like the term übermoderator. ;-)
The reason I didn't post the rules is because I'm waiting for the PhillyBlog Community Guidelines to be finalized. http://phillyblog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4243 To restate what I meant to say before. Before you post, please use the search feature. http://phillyblog.com/forum/search.php it's not rocket science ...

I can see why you want to keep everything in its proper place, but I'm not sure you can expect too much since this blog attracts a lot of people just surfing around. There are many, many different categories - I didn't even see them all until recently. As a pretty new poster, these guidelines are common sense but not evident. I mean, I realized TWO days ago that some of you are not actual pretzel vendors. I really thought that!

So what would constitute a "General Discussion" post? Seems like every "General Discussion" post could be categorized in the other subject areas.

I agree with many of you that we shouldn't be too crazy-rigid with the posting categories but, that said, since many people DO actually just surf, it makes sense to make sure that things are in the right place.
If I come to phillyblog.com just to find out about local restaurants, I shouldn't have to read about the Cira Center or Mayor Street's trial under Food and Drink... And I shouldn't have to browse through General Discussion to find out where the best place to grab a cheesesteak is... The categories aren't meant to be limiting, they're meant to provide some order for those of you who are actually seeking something specific. Of course, we'd also love for you to stay awhile and browse, but we're trying to make the blog user-friendly for everyone, so it's helpful to have guidelines to make that happen. We moderators are working with Wil to come up with some useful, user-friendly, sensical guidelines. If you have any feedback about those, you should let us know. I don't think I am overreaching to say that I think we'd all appreciate it. |

I was recently upset when two topics I posted to General Discussion were moved, one to Nation and the other the Parenting. I didn't understand that General Discussion was really for Philadelphia Discussion.
I really wanted the 'breastfeeding' discussion under general discussion rather than 'parenting'. After all breastfeeding in public is not a 'parenting' issue. It's a public issue. Maybe I should have made the subject Breastfeeding in Philly. In the future I'll try to target the topics to Philly. Or the blog may want to consider a true "General Discussion" and a "Philly Discussion" |

There are already a ton of forums (qty 37!) 37 forums for ~100 regular posters is quite generous as is. Adding another will cause more ruckus.
