>In addition to fixing the trashcans, we should also fix the trash collectors. Every trash day, I see more loose trash on the street after the pickup than before.

that problem is caused more by the homeless people ripping through all the garbage bags looking for the rest of the banana that you didnt eat.....or maybe some old toothbrushes that they can go sell at the hobo auction in bumtown ...more so than the garbage men.... seriously...you cant expect them to pick up all the loose garbage that falls out

thats what the people that come later on in the day are for!! i dont know if theyre city workers..... or parolees or whatever ... but they do a pretty good job cleaning up what the garbage men left behind

I've done the Philly Care Days where you bust your butt picking up trash all day to the laughs and jeers of the locals and as you're finishing (or while your sweeping) someone walks by and throws a food container on the ground in front of you.
I did not say ELIMINATE i said LESS LIKELY

some people are plain filthy but the more the example is set the better things will be. Sadly people need to be cleaned up after.

I like that these trash cans have a top for cigarette butts. Like it or not, people smoke. Lots of the litter you'll see outside stores and buildings are cigarette butts.
If smokers have a place to put their butts, maybe they will

Do-gooders has such a negative connotation to it.

You'd probably criticize me for giving dollars to the bum on Delaware Avenue train tracks by the Super Fresh.

I mean, so what if it perpetuates him staying there, shooting smack next to the McDonalds dumpster, shocking families with small children? We do-gooders don't think things through that far.

Good for you
Acknowledging that you have a problem is the first step

Frankly, it has nothing to do with a national audience. This is for internal consumption.
Good point Neil; I didn't get the sense that Nutter was piling on to negative perceptions about our City's cleanliness but was rather issuing a call to action to residents. It's just one of the many things that Nutter is going to improve during his eight years in office...he's going to make Philadelphia a cleaner place.
