Default Trash one of the biggest downers for a new homeowner

Having lived in center city for 6 years as a renter, before moving to a S. Philly home we bought last year, I admit I never estimated how much a downer the sight of trash everywhere would be. I'm thrilled the presumptive next mayor has the guts to put this issue out there at the outset. The sight of trash everywhere has lately had me thinking of when I will move my family out of here, but as there are also many positive things in the horizon, I'm trying my best to see the positives.

I agree with Nutter and hope that he can change things but don't underestimate the attitude in this city. If this statement was true (and I think it would be for most of us) there would be no litter in the Fairmount or Wissahickon parks (there is).

I've done the Philly Care Days where you bust your butt picking up trash all day to the laughs and jeers of the locals and as you're finishing (or while your sweeping) someone walks by and throws a food container on the ground in front of you.

For some reason, the trash problem has gotten monumentally worse in the past 2-3 years for some reason.

And of course, there are large areas of the City that don't quite have this problem.

True, but city council people don't usually get paid much attention, nor does anyone really expect them to be in the news or trying to change attitudes. For better or worse, the mayor is the person people look to for this kind of leadership. With some luck, maybe he'll make a difference.

Ya know Dave..

I really hope he does.

I hope he just doesn't get bogged down trying to reform 100 years of screw-ups..

In addition to fixing the trashcans, we should also fix the trash collectors. Every trash day, I see more loose trash on the street after the pickup than before. Especially around the city cans on the corners. In old city trash day is thurs night/fri morning. Two weeks ago on first friday there was a big ring of coffee cups, plastic silverware, etc. on the ground around most every trashcan in old city on Friday morning. There's been several first fridays that happen after a holiday e.g. 4th of july or labor day or memorial day and then the mounds and mounds of trash are all over the place during first friday because they don't pick up till Saturday. The beginning of summer/beginning of school year FF's are usually the busiest, and we have alot of out of town or suburban visitors here.

Nutter has this one pegged and we should all do our part to help on our own streets and neighborhoods. Make sure your trash is bagged well enough that it won't rip open and spread all over the street when they pick it up. Keep the bags in cans if possible, and don't put loose trash in the can.

Give out muni cans.

Of course your CVS bag is going to rip open and blow down the street.
