Hi all,
I just stumbled across your website, and I wondered if I could pick the brains of some of its resident posters My girlfriend is from Philly but she lives over here in the UK and for a long time now, whenever a special occasion came around, I have wanted to buy her a gift with a Philly theme. But try as I might, I have been unable to find her a suitable present (other than the inevitable sporting memorabilia!). So I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to point me in the direction of where I may be able to buy such a present from? (Sorry in advance, I know 'Philly-themed' is a little vague ) Gary |

What about just trying to make that stuff? The soft pretzels and cheesesteaks look kind of easy to do if you can get a hold of all of the ingredients and the recipes are all over the internet.
Everything else I could think of / find is food related, and I don't know how well any kind of food would hold up for that kind of trip. What about, at the top of this forum's main forum list is the "Philly Photos" forum (or whatever it's called). There are some great pictures and photographers in there. Maybe you could contact one of the photographers and commission them to go out and find a particular area that your girlfriend was familiar with or liked to go and see more often than not...maybe it's just the skyline, I don't know. But get them to take a couple of artsy photographs for you and maybe even just print, frame and ship them out. I'm sure you could do all of that yourself as well though if they just emailed you the files. Give it a shot. |

Nothing says "I love you" like memorabilia from our <strike>crappy</strike> excellent transit system. This is particularly cool. Larger picture
Then there's always the MUTTER MUSEUM gift shop. Last edited by sputnik : 09-19-2007 at 02:26 PM. Reason: I hate html |

I agree, rotten food isn't really going to have the effect you want...perhaps some Philadelphia cookbooks.
The Original Philadelphia Neighborhood Cookbook (Paperback) The Original Philadelphia Neighborhood Cookbook presents the many tastes of over 50 Philadelphia neighborhoods. The authors have collected a wealth of easy-to-prepare, kitchen-tested dishes for all occasions and times of day. Each recipe includes ethnic origins and background commentary as well as serving suggestions and variations. Philadelphia, a city of neighborhoods, now has a cookbook that represents the rich culinary tastes and practices of its residents. http://www.amazon.com/Original-Phila...0212802&sr=8-1 The White Dog Cafe Cookbook: Recipes and Tales of Adventure from Philadelphia's Revolutionary Restaurant (Paperback) Judy Wicks, the owner of Philadelphia's renowned White Dog Cafe, has a clear agenda. "I use food to lure innocent customers into social action," she says. Since 1973, her restaurant has been known as much for the themed evenings it hosts to raise awareness for various causes as for the food prepared by Chef Kevin Von Klause, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. As in her restaurant, promoting causes is important in this book. Stories about trips to Cuba and to Nicaragua prove that Wicks is no sunshine hippie, but rather a deeply committed entrepreneur. (The Cafe serves coffee from organically grown beans imported by a company started by a fellow traveler she invited on one of those Nicaraguan trips, and it has ongoing relationships with a number of "sister" restaurants around the world.) http://www.amazon.com/White-Cafe-Coo...0212802&sr=8-2 |

Excellent suggestions, guys, thank you very much!
(Sorry sputnik, thanks to my works firewall, I cant open your links. I'm assuming, given some of the stories my g/f has told me about her experiences of riding the el, they were less than complimentary!) |
