It's not an either/or situation, we need to be taking both approaches at the same time. The long-term survival of the city depends on jobs, education, community resurgences, etc. However, we're in the middle of a crime emergency, and immediate actions need to be taken to reign in some of the excesses we're seeing.

Come to the NE.

What emergency?

Honestly.. 5 Staties are like 25 cops.

Staties are ex-military robots.

Last weekend there was 1 murder in the city which is almost good news. I wonder if this had anything to do with the presence of State Troopers and the ramifications of perps being caught?
Yeah at this point i have come to the conclusion that the Mayor just flat out doesn't care. I am not sure who i hate more, bush or street. Its really a tough call at this point. Misguided war in Iraq vs misguided war in philly.

Your fear has been realized.

The press conference and fanfare to announce this auspiscious occasion failed to mention that little tid bit of information. That they're adding 5...that's f i v e patrolmen.

But he has a point. Press conference called by Johnson in the wake of a bus being shot up, attended by top state commander and an aide from Rendell's office to prove they're doing something and that something is bringing in an undisclosed number or state troopers. It was a publicity stunt. And the truth is, a job fair would probably do more to reduce crime than 5 patrolmen.

I beg to differ -- Yes you are probably right about the whole thing being a publicity stunt, but the very idea of putting state troopers on Philly streets (whether it be 5, 50 or 500) just might make people think twice before committing a crime much less carrying (and using) guns.

How would a job fair help the murder situation in Philly? Gun-toting thugs aren't looking for jobs. I dunno, I feel that if people really want to work and earn a living in many cases all you have to do is apply yourself ie:get off yer a$$.

And people with jobs typically don't become gun toting thugs. It's no secret mystery that crime declines during times of prosperity and increases during economic decline.

People who commit crimes don't think they'll be caught. Adding 5 troopers isn't going to change that mindset. Nor is it going to actually catch all that many people. Is it a good thing to add 5 cops? Of course! But it's not the "significant step in fighting crime in the city" that Johnson claimed. It's a drop in the bucket.

At least Bush is having muslims killed and most of the people being killed in Philly are criminals anyway. Let's be positive, people!
