Default The chicken wing graveyard

OK, so I don't understand and I'm sure this topic has been covered at length in the past, but I'm new and I'm playing the ignorance card at this point in time.

What's with the chucking of leftover chicken bones on the street? Besides being gross - it's stupid. My dog used to be pretty well behaved about potential sidewalk goodies, but who can resist a mouth-watering moldy, chik-o-snack sitting right there in the street? No one, that's who! So he munches away and then I have to deal with the 3 a.m. bouts of vomit (or worse).

If that wasn't sad enough, now I'm constantly on "wing patrol" and look like a freak as I walk the dog and have to watch to make sure his jaw isn't "moving" and yelling "Drop The Wing"!!!!

Seriously - more garbage cans in Philly or less wings.

I think they fall out of the sneakers draped across the electric and phone wires.

The problem isn't limited to chicken wings. People chuck everything on the sidewalk, from food waste to the dead batteries they just removed from their discman. The availability of waste receptacles doesn't appear to make a significant difference.

Great thread title.

Dave is right. You see people littering all the time around here - whether it's the pedestrians or the drivers tossing trash out of their cars. The other day we watched a U of Arts security guard walking down 13th St: he unwrapped his candy bar and dropped the wrapper in the gutter without a 2nd thought. WashWestMom gave him an earful., but i doubt it will change his behavior.

Chicken bones are bad near me but not worse than lorenzos crusts. Why don't people eat the crust on their slice of Lorenzos pizza? They are all over QV and south street. My dog is constantly on patrol for crusts and I swear has put on 5 pounds over the last few months due to this. He's super stealthful now, feigning disinterest, but I think a walk just means pizza time now.

I once witnessed a mother, while waiting for the bus at 8th and Market Streets, instruct her daughter to put her empty soda can on the ground, rather than in the very nearby trashcan. Being in a very bad mood that day already, I made a big production out of snatching up the can with a grand gesture, looking right at them and walking it a few steps to the trash can. The reaction: the mother just looked at me for a moment, and that was it.

My other litter story, again when I was in a very bad mood. I witnessed a woman put a half-drunk cup of coffee on top of a newsbox at 12th and Walnut. I picked it up and caught up with her 1/2 a block later and said, "This is your coffee cup. People live around here, you know, and don't want to look at this. Why don't you just throw it away." She told me she left it on the newsbox on purpose for the homeless. Not knowing what else to say, I just handed her the cup and she walked away.

I guess the moral of the story is the question: Does it do any good to confront people? I get very annoyed at littering, but unless I'm already agitated about something else, I don't say anything. So, when I do say something, I'm probably in the wrong state of mind in the first place. Plus, you 've got to wonder if you confront the wrong person, will you be assaulted.

how about the people that buy food and wait till they get on the bus?
and if they have to stand they eat over you. its like a moveable feast.
when thier done they stuff whats left under the seats. some times its the driver whos doing the eating.

I've always wanted to light up a cigarette on the bus - then point to person eating some awful greasy stuff and tell the driver he needs to enforce the law as posted on every bus.

The sign on every bus draws no distinction between smoking, eating and drinking. Only the driver chooses to ignore it.

You need the DC Metro police to show those slobs a thing or two. Just recently, a woman was arrested for chowing down on a PayDay bar after she crossed the threshold of the metro station. Man-handled, cuffed and taken to the clinker!!! She paid a minor fee and was let out.

Wow, those folks could work for the Parking Authority.

I wouldn't light up to protest a stupid candy bar - or even a cup of coffee or a soda.

But, I draw the line at these folks who eat an entire meal while they ride. And as much as people complain about second hand smoke, how about second hand chicken and fries odors. At 7:45 in the morning
