I've been to Philly for various reasons in June for the last three years, and there is a very old (historic) building in the Bala Cynwyd (sp?) area, on one of the main drags, that is apparently an old inn from the (revolutionary?) war. People who have owned it have apparently had troubles such as financial failures, suicide, etc. Rumor has it that it is haunted by a soldier.

Every time we'd drive down that boulevard I'd pipe up from the back seat, in my dorky, ahistorically west coast-awed voice: "There's the haunted inn!" It was more interesting to me, I guess, than to the locals, who'd just roll their eyes at me...

I grew up about two blocks from there - The General Wayne Inn on Montgomery Ave in Merion. Guy Sileo killed his partner James Webb, took them a while to prove it as the LM cops couldn't catch a cold. But I had a friend who used to work there. All kinds of crazyness went on. Car alarms going off for no reason, doors slamming, lites dimming ect. I took a tour of the Friends meeting house in the back and there are lots of people buried there including some Hessians. I can't really remember this was about 15 years ago. There is a legend that some of the Raven was written there inspired by a picture of one that used to hang there.

I also have a cheesy little book my Mom gave me years ago regarding haunted houses in Philly. One place that sticks in my head was the PA Historical Society on 13th St at I think Spruce? Washington Sq - Bonaparte house - some jilted lover? Also supposedly the statue of Ben Franklin in front of the Pennsylvania Hospital at 8th and Pine would walk around. Pretty hookie stuff.

My brother in South Philly said his neighbor moved after she would walk thru the house at night and see an apparition of the former tenant who hung himself.

The only experience I have ever really had with something like this was a few months ago riding my bike down Elfreth's Alley late at night I swear there was someone right behind me, like I could feel them, but I turned and nothing. Scared the bejezzus outta me!

Eek, I hate that! That happened to me at Mexican Post (no, I hadn't had any margaritas yet). I was walking up the stairs from the restroom, and it sounded like someone had come out of the men's room, and was walking up behind me. I turned around to hold open the door for the, uh, person behind me...surprise, no one there! :what:

"Unsolved Mysteries" with Robert Stack did an entire show on The General Wayne Inn back in the 80's (a few years before the Webb murder). The place is supposed to be crawling with Revolutionary War era ghosts. Many people who have worked there over the years have had hundreds of run ins with the spirits and some refused to retrieve stock from the store room without a 'burly' escort!!!

I meant to mention that in my post, I could not remember the name of the show. I saw that years ago.
