Default Philadelphia IS beautiful!

And, if you need further proof, I just received notice from PHS today that there is a tour in September of award-winning urban gardens. If you're interested, check it out (info from web site at http://www.gophila.com/philaneighbor...rs.htm#gardens):

Urban Oases
Together with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Neighborhood Tourism Network is pleased to introduce a new tour series, Urban Oases, that showcases the transforming power and beauty of Philadelphia’s gardens, parks and other green spaces.

Winning City Gardens – September 25, 2004
Visit some of the city’s most outstanding gardens during this tour of winners of the City Garden Contest. Flower gardens, window boxes, community gardens and urban farms will all be on display as you travel the city’s neighborhoods. Winning gardeners will be on hand to share their secrets and respond to your inquiries.

--

PS - My garden won't be on the tour but boy, this rain has been good for at least one thing this year!

Default Good Stewards

Most of what makes Philly great is because of the visonaries who lived here in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

It would be great if today's leaders had the same vision.

But visionaries are never appreciated in their own time. Not that I'm nominating anyone.

Well, it wasn't necessarily the visionaries of the 19th century-
it was their money.

Philadelphia in the 1800s controlled the supply of anthracite coal.
Anthracite coal was the irreplacable fuel for industry.

Philadelphia's control of the hard coal supply made it the OPEC of the 1850s.

Well, I sometimes think we have cornered the market in old tires. We could burn them someplace other than under I-95.

Actually I recently read an article about using old tired to make plastic railroad ties. A bunch of the railroads are testing them.

We could rebuild the whole coast to coast railroad - and drive a rubber spike at Promentory Point.

They built a road with old tires somewhere out west and the road caught on fire. They had trouble putting it out. Never saw a follow-up on that story.
