David Simon and Ed Burns are doing amazing and important work. Simon was a newspaper reporter who wrote the book Homicide, which was about a year in the Baltimore homicide unit back when Baltimore was the murder capital of the USA. It came out in the 80s, I read it in the 90s, and it's another 10 years later and nothing has changed. Burns was a cop, a reporter, and a teacher. Together and with great supporting help, they are revealing why things are the way they are and why it hasn't changed in 20+ years.
Besides being important, it is also very involving and entertaining television. It's great that HBO stayed with it so long and allowed it to get a following. I find references to The Wire from the most unlikely people. |

I can understand your sentiment to an extent. A lot of times you wonder how one person can make it and another can't.
The one thing I realize about life whether you grow up poor, rich, form a two parent household or one, is what usually makes a person a success is the internal drive to succeed and a person(s) believing in them and opening the door for them to succeed. How many times in your life have you opened the door for someone else? Quote:

I think it also depends on how you measure success. If one is Happy in life then they're a success. It's really that simple in my book. No one needs to open a door for happiness, it's inherant in our make up, but many are diverted with lofty dreams of what success really is. Life really does happen while were busy making plans, to quote John Lennon.

Your right.
An education can make a world of difference in the pursuit of happiness. An education from the streets and academia can be great starting ground for a person's pursuit of ther ultimate happiness. However, most people have not once in their life took the time out to help a person who wanted more out of life...just dimissed them by their name, their attractivness, their family lineage their skin color I can go on..... Just a piece of information to a person in need can be the catalyst to their overall happiness. How many times has the average person missed out on making a difference in someone else's life? This is turn is why I like the Wire so much, because this is shown without it being corny, or "we are the world-ish". The simplest kind act can make a world of difference. |
