The data came from http://cml.upenn.edu/crimebase

I used the neighborhood reports, for which the latest data was for 2005.

This makes my head swim ... so what would be the best source if I wanted to see how many car break-ins there have been in a three block radius from my house?

I'd go to cml.upenn.edu and see if they still have crime statistics at the census blockgroup level (they did last I was there for serious research, but the site's changed a bit since then).
