TO make it interesting..

You should compare it to these factors.

Unemployment, temperature (daily), and the Prime Rate for the last 10.

You'll see it's more due to the economy and the weather than how many cops we have.

I would love to do that kind of comparison. I'd also like to chart it in comparison to clusters of media reporting, the work of non-profits, gun sales, mayoral press-conferences, even moon phases. But that sort of stuff is awfully difficult to track down. As it is, I haven't been able to find a daily or weekly breakdown for murders in Philadelphia going back past 2006. If anyone knows where I can find that, I'd appreciate a post or pm.

Yeah, you should also compare the numbers to similar cities that are at least as cold or colder... like Montreal and New York.

Not fair, Montreal is in Canada. Totally different set of laws.

Keep it within the continental United States!

Default Murder Rate Down 30%

Just a quick note: As of last night, there had been 35 murders in Philly, compared with 50 for the same period in 2007 and 43 for 2006. That is a drop of 30% and 18% respectively.

It's not the laws. It's the culture, as well as the competence of their leadership.

You also ignored my reference to New York.

I'll also add Los Angeles. They're murder rate is down to around 10 since Bratton (the guy who was police commissioner in New York under Giuliani) took over at the police department. How cold does it get in LA again?
