Hi everyone. I'm currently looking at houses and want to move to Fishtown.
I used to live in NoLibs and shopped at the Acme(?) on Arimingo. Are there any other little grocery places within decent walking distance of Frankford/Girard intersection? I have heard about the farmers market on Frankford... I will not have a car, just my trusty bike. Thanks. |

Yes, there is a difference here. There's alot of mom&pops in Fishtown. mom&pop = general corner store. You've got Thriftway in the Aramingo Plaza, prices are ok. Peantreaty Food Mkt at Girard and Frankford. Then you have ACME at Aramingo and Westmoreland Pathmark at Aramingo and Venango Shopright in the home depot plaza at Aramingo Castor. If your looking to save money, then it's best to shop at differentplaces for what you want. For instance, for meat, beef chicken, lunch meat, Wilsons Meat market and Hanks general store can't be beat for prices and freshness. Stay away from Front Street all the items sold there are cheap knockoffs. |

Just like the Korean corner stores around here that sell Oriental products, are called Sunjee, Ochibun'e, X'iachua And yes, I take offense to Ethnic terms being used in a trendy mainstream way. People need to stop the biting and come up with their own chit. el, I'll try calling a buddy of mine's bodega Madre y padre. I'll let ya kjnow what he says..lol |

No actually, bodegas were all corner stores--as called by people who grew up in NYC, regardless of ethnicity. Just like tissue is now called Kleenex. Is all tissue Kleenex? No. So it became part of the vernacular, whether accurate or not.
CW--you've made it obvious that you take offense to many things--I've gathered that. I've also gathered that to you I represent the epitome of all evil, and you're going to take issue with whatever I say on any topic, regardless of if it has anything to do with the post. I think this girl wants to know about grocery stores. Does anyone know about a grocery store going in on 2nd near Aden in N. Libs? My realtor was telling me something about it--and I remember seeing the construction, but can't remember exactly what it was. Because that would be biking distance as well for you--Prettie.

part of living in america is dealing with your ethnic terms being copted into the mainstream. it happens. how many people incorrectly pronounce yero (gyro) as gyro (like gyrate) as if it were some cheap dance? how many people eat tacos? how mexican is that? these things happen. many words in english come from other countries/cultures. amuk is not originally english, neither is java. dollar is not english.
at any rate, hope there really is some more food stores on teh way to northern liberties. it's one of the main things keeping me away. |

I called his bodega madre y padre, he asked me I was smoking rock..lmao. Anyway, there's benifets to living in the ghetto....wow did I just say that? lol. There is, like being able to buy things very cheap if you know were to look, food is no different in this matter. Since you'd be on foot, unless your willing to take the bus up aramingo ave, you'll be confined to Fishtown, and the downside is, that from what I've seen, stores around here have begun to raise their prices with all the new people moving in. Even with paying for Septa you would still possibly save money. If your looking to get a decent used car, stay away from the used dealerships on Kensington ave, Lehigh ave, Front street. They over charge for some real pieces of sh*t. Stay away from certain auto auctions too, like Capital up on State Rd. There's other places were you can get late model used cars at great prices, from some little known neighborhood auto auctions. As for the farmers market, I have'nt heard of one on Frankford ave, there is one on Front street, at Front & Berks. Just below Frankford ave I have'nt shopped there myself so I can't say anything about quality and prices. |
