Safety in Old City/Northern Liberties
My partner and I are considering signing a lease in the 444 Lofts. I feel good about Northern Liberties and Old City, but I'm not sure about this no man's land between them. What do folks know about that area? Will we be able to walk home from N. 2nd Street or the Spring Garden station at night and feel safe? Anything we should know about that area, on 4th south of Spring Garden?

My husband and I almost rented office space in the 444 Lofts area. We live in Old City. It is safe, but you have to go with what your instincts tell you. We walked it at different times of day. I knew walking it on a winter evening as if I were walking home from the office I would not feel comfortable walking it alone. That is just me. As someone mentioned what you need to be concerned with is crazy drivers.

I live at 8th and Fairmount take the el home, walk from Spring garden,I was almost robbed on Fairmount and 7th.But I turned in time and he ran.There are a lot of car break in you can see the glass in the street.And I have heard there are stick ups.But most of the time it is very quite and nice.After 5th street it gets ruff.2nd and 3rd I love it people out, I hang in Ortliebs a lot.And love the food at Silk City.People are having a hard time if you have it they want it..I moved there from 19th and Chestnut.They are picking off people in town also you cannot get away from it.I carry pepper spray now.I just pray I don't run into some one with a gun.Things that happen in the better hoods are keep on the DL.But they let you know what is going on in the bad ones.

I think you will be fine taking the normal precautions.
I walk home most nights from Broad and Walnut. So I walk: Down Walnut or Sansom Head North on 3rd East on Spring Garden North on 2nd up to Girard I am a single female (early 30s) and no one has ever bothered me. I prefer taking 3rd North from Old City and not 2nd because it seems to be a little busier and safer but that's just me. Again, taking the normal precautions you should be fine.
