Agree (well, about the $45 tees being a tough sell, not about a Mafia front). It's unfair to blame it on lack of foot traffic: Quince, 2 doors away, does fine. (And they're selling gourmet goodies, not pizza like George's on the corner.) When I saw that Urban Baby had opened I gave it 6 months max. A shame, because we're all for more retail on Girard. But sustainable retail.

You know, in the end run, the woman who opened the shop is in her early 20's. She took a big risk and made a lot of mistakes. That happens. A lot.
I really do hope she picks herself up, takes the lessons to heart and I really hope she starts up something else. Since moving to Philly a year ago, I really have been loving meeting all these people my age, and younger, who are taking risks to build something for themselves and their communities. I find it really disheartening to see so many back handed comments when a business goes down but I guess that comes with the territory. Opening a business puts an owner in the public scrutiny no matter what and you are going to take a few on the chin. Somewhat vulnerable. If the owner of the former Urbanite Baby is reading this thread, don't sweat it. Take a break, brush it off and try something else. You'll find your footing at some point. Everything you did adds to your experience and knowledge, and it will all be extremely useful to you as you move into other things and take other risks. |

Indeed. I applaud the balls it takes to open a business like that on your own, but I couldn't help but laugh when I went in there to get a quick baby present and the girl starts quoting me prices.
This book is great....$39 This tshirt is a big seller.....$48 That store would do fine on Liberties Walk after they put up enough expensive condos that there's enough clientele.
