Apparently, your not allowed to put in speed bumps because someone might lose control when they are speeding down the street in a car.
I doubt this is an issue that will ever be solved by police. Cops don't want to get involved in chasing minors, too many things can go wrong. They also arn't allowed to chase these guys because of the danger. I think if someone hurts themselves during a chase, there is a certain amount of responsibility that falls on the officers shoulders. |

I remember hearing that the rumble strips on the Jersey side of the Ben Franklin Bridge were filed down because of the damage they were causing to the cars that sped over them. I think 295 and the Turnpike are the only roads left in NJ without some sort of speed bump, hump or mountainous region meant to slow people down. I haven't seen one car in a tree yet. |

Yeah, but they shouldn't be speeding to begin with. Then again, in the event of an emergency (fire, EMS) speed bumps would not be a good thing... ![]() I got it! Remote controled speed bumps... . Fire/Police/EMS personnel would be able to control in the event of of an emergency...Arent' there laws for driving unlicenced ATVs? I don't see them as much as I did a couple years ago, but when I did, there were around 8 guys on ATVs driving up Frankford Ave Cops started to follow them so they took off, some driving down oneway street, one sped towards me (one way street) by driving 1/2 on the street and 1/2 on the sidewalk. The moron had the audacity to beep shout Get the F*K out of the way man... Cops should be involved, if they get caught, confiscate the vehicle, fine the offender with a huge fine, and if he's a minor, again confiscate the vehicle, hold them until their parents come with a citation fee/ release fee.

I agree with this completely:
Cops should be involved, if they get caught, confiscate the vehicle, fine the offender with a huge fine, and if he's a minor, again confiscate the vehicle, hold them until their parents come with a citation fee/ release fee. However...they are really hard to catch. The manuverability and speed of most of these vehicles makes them very difficult for a cop in a cruiser to catch. I started thinking, well why not put cops on dirt bikes to patrol for these guys? But that'd be way too dangerous for the cops and if a chase did ensue pedestrians and law abiding motorists would be put at risk. Which is mainly why they don't give chase on these guys to begin with. What they should do is ride around looking for houses where these things are parked outside. They could, resources premitting, put an undercover on their block waiting for them to pull out on the street and snag them there. Then if they run, they could just deliver the fine to their home. And come back and confiscate the vehicle at a later time. Neighbors who know their neighbors have these things are are riding them illegally could call in anyonymous tips. It's really the parents who buy these things for their kids that piss me off. They have to know their kids ride around the city on them, its not like they can say they are heading to trails or something. |

And it doesn't have to be police. Create a task force and pay someone $30k instead of paying useless administrative positions $100k in other areas. In inner city areas, people can't put ATV's in their rowhomes..so write addresses where they are outside and take pictures. When police do need to follow...use controlled chases (which they already do). Go to PepBoys and other ATV sellers and get the addresses of those that have purchased ATV's using a Philly address. Or the city could pass a law outlawing the sale of ATV within city limits. Its minor quality of life issues that this city MUST fix before it can take on the major issues at task. |
