last fall they razed a giant lot on sergeant between memphis and tulip, and now there is a guy with a backhoe digging what will either be several basements or a mass grave of some sort.

between his rudimentary english and my atrocious high school spanish, we couldn't get much further than "ci, el hoyo es mui grande."

does anyone know what is being built, and by whom?

Meanwhile, gefiltefishtown - great name. Which begs the question: living in this neighborhood, would you, in 2008 put a mezuzah on your front door? Legitimate question, as I have already decided I'm not going to because as much as I love my new hood, I don't think attitudes of the longtime residents have changed as much as we want to believe they have.
