So, I just put a deposit on a house on Webb St. in Fishtown. I'm moving from Boston in a few weeks and am suddenly struck with the "what did I do where am I moving" panics. The area over there is super commercial and definitely lacks charm, but I like the house. Anyone live in that part of Fishtown? Any thoughts on the area?
I saw some places over near Belgrade and thought the area had more charm, but the places I saw were not great. Thoughts? |

I'm not familiar with Webb St. . but looking it up on google maps.. makes it look more like it's a bit north.. in either "new" kensington or Port Richmond. I can't find a webb st. in an area that I would personally consider "fishtown", but that could just be because it seems to be near 95 and there is not enough detail on the maps there. (Real estate agents will sometimes describe things as "fishtown" because it has a better buzz/reputation than calling something 'kensington'.) |

It's near a Wawa, off of Cumberland. I want to say near Aramingo Ave. Is that not Fishtown?
Here's the mapquest link: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/2500+we...iladelphia+pa/ |

I have a buddy who lives only a few blocks away from there. It ain't a bad area. Lots of families in Fishtown have been living in the area for decades, although there is a small population of yuppies moving in. The area is generally safe, if you aren't afraid of a couplea groups of wandering drunk kids every now and then. Not a bad place to live at all. Also, Aramingo Ave. has all sorts of chain restaurants, gas stations, convenient stores...I believe the closest supermarket is the ShopRite on Aramingo and Castor (5 minute drive). Just don't venture too far NW becauase suddenly the neighborhoods aren't so pretty.
If you want a better idea of what it looks like, use google's street view feature to see what the area is like. Hope that helped. |

14 years ago, when I moved from Boston [where I was paying $800 for 2000s.f. loft in Fort Point], I found a 2000 s.f. sublet in Fishtown for $350, I later found out the subleter was only paying $160 !
There are cheaper places but they are easier to find in September, you could always move to a place in center city and sublet the Webb place. oh and welcome to philly, the best move I ever made! |

That area is generally considered Port Richmond. $1K rental for a 3 bedroom in a major metropolitan city THAT close to downtown is a good deal--you can search around more when you get here after your lease ends. Honestly, that really DOES sound like a good deal. It's a quiet area over there but close to the grocery store, Hollywood Video, Wawa (cheapest gas in the city), CVS, etc.
