...stupid question.. youngster trying to recycle in Northern Liberties...

where do i pick up an official bin so that I can make sure that my stuff gets recycled and not thrown picked up by the trash truck?

I tried googling but had no luck.

Just to be clear, although there exist official containers (and, apparently, stickers, which was news to me) you don't actually need to use them. Your container doesn't even need to be blue, although the official ones are so that makes yours easier to identify as such.

Quoting from http://64.78.36.115/faq.asp (that's the IP address that recyclingpays.phila.gov redirects you to; one baffles at the bureaucracy in City Hall that leads to completely broken DNS use):
Where do I get a recycling bin?
The City will give you a recycling bin at any of these locations. But you don't have to have one. You can use any household container (no larger than 20 gallons), as long as you write "RECYCLING" on it.

Single stream (all in one container, including corrugated cardboard and 1&2 plastics) is going city-wide in July. I heard they may start in the river wards in May, but it might just be that they are starting to promote/distribute information in May. I assume they'll have some sort of big earth-day kickoff for this announcement. (It's on the city's recycling site already.)

Single-stream recycling to expand

By Sandy Bauers
Inquirer Staff Writer

The convenience of placing a range of recyclables in a single container for curbside pickup - "single stream," in industry parlance - will expand to 150,000 households in North Philadelphia and several lower Northeast neighborhoods on May 5, the city announced yesterday.
That means all city residences except about 80,000 homes in Northwest Philadelphia will have single-stream recycling, and those will be added in July, the Streets Department said.

With single stream, the city will pick up paper, cardboard, glass, plastic bottles, and tin and aluminum cans all mixed together.

In addition to North Philadelphia, the areas to be added next month are Northern Liberties, Frankford, Kensington, Logan, Olney and East Oak Lane.

And:

weekly collection in January 2009.

FYI, Fishtown is part of this round of additions, even though the newspaper failed to report that.

So there is no more 1st Saturday recycling done by the FNA on Montgomery and Moyer Streets, if you missed previous announcements.

Their map does a better job of saying who is changing:

Who doesn't live in 4? lol

Yes, when single stream begins they will take corrugated cardboard. You can simply put it in your recycling bin with everything else, or tie it up with twine and leave it on the curb with your bin.
