Not even that, before they destroyed Schmidts remaining shell, you could see it when you went down Germantown Ave.

Well, that is if if you were ok with vagrants and sex workers back in 1996...

Google maps still has it listed, along with the other "trucks only" streets

Per a google search, City Council officially renamed many streets to their popular names in 1853 - Rose Street became Van Horn Street.

This actually isn't the first time Tower has proposed to re-create Van Horn St. The current proposal is (I think) the 6th one since Tower acquired the site in 2000. Proposal #3 (which, if memory serves, dates from '03/'04) proposed reinstating Van Horn and a number of the other old streets.

FWIW (which may not be much!), my opinion is that this current proposal is probably the best from Tower so far, or at least in the top two (#4, which featured three 18-story towers in the center of the property, sitting atop the green roof of a 1/2-story below-grade parking garage, was generally very well-received in NL as well).

Best,
Matt

Default Vanhorn: a city council member

Searching further on google, I found an item in the Philadelphia Press newspaper from 1858 that details the Philadelphia City Council proceedings from that year (I'm unsure of the specific date). The article states that the council discussed renaming a number of streets in the city's neighborhoods. (The city and county had only been consolidated four years earlier and was expanding rapidly. Streets were being renamed, among other reasons, because the city hoped to avoid duplication of street names.)

One of the City Council members voting on that occasion was a fellow named Charles Vanhorn [who represented Ward 15, northwest center city, below Poplar St.]. Another member was named Richard Wildey, [who represented Ward 18, east Kensington].

Since we have already established in previous posts the likelihood that Rose St. was renamed Vanhorn St. around 1858, and since a nearby portion of Wildey St. (formerly Bedford St.) was also renamed the same year, it seems quite possible that City Council simply named the streets after two of its own members.

They're out taking soil samples at 2nd and Girard today. Nice to see some movement however small.

The back part of Hancock is coming along and is gonna be sweet!

Checked out Hancock a week ago. The new buildings are vastly superior to the first one. It's good to see better design. I still think there will be a noise issue between the units but it's better than exposed concrete block walls.

Yeah, they were out taking soil samples and digging test holes about 3 weeks ago, so I assumed they were moving forward. That presentation is just fantastic. Lets hope they don't cut too many corners. 27 stories is HUGE, but density right here will good for North Philly as a whole. Those rich folk will need services and stores and that means jobs. Add that to the Sugarhouse jobs and opportunities will be growing on trees around here. Don't f*** this up Bart.

Edit: On a side note....where's my damn North Star! Haven't had one delivered in forever.

Edit II: Lets not forget that a big "Thank you!" needs to go out to Matt Ruben and everyone else at the NLNA for pushing this project to be neighborhood friendly. Nice work!

Yeah, now if people stop worrying about non existant shadows, maybe we can finally have a place that we can be proud to call our gateway.

Go down and take a look now. The courtyard or whatever it's going to be is amazing. I'll take some pics Saturday and post.
