From what I understand, Flat Iron is distinct from Kensington, and they are now calling themselves Olde Richmond via the Olde Richmonde Civic Association.

East Kensington
Olde Kensington
Kensington South
West Kensington
Kensington and Allegheny (K&A)

Some would consider Harrowgate to be a section of Kens.

At one point, Northern Liberties, Fishtown, and Richmond were all consider Kensington, when it was a municipality distinct from the city.

OLDE RICHMOND CIVIC ASSOCIATION BOUNDARIES
"The organization shall concern, cover, include and represent the interests of the area in the County of Philadelphia in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania bounded on the East by the Delaware River, on the West by the East side of Trenton Avenue, on the North by the Conrail Railroad lines, and on the South along the River by the I-95 interchange and by the North Side of York Street from Aramingo Avenue westward."

Interesting. Never heard of this designation. People are really determined to dispatch with the "Kensington" tag.

What is the difference between Olde and South Kensingtons? and aren't they both in West Kensingtion? Is Norris Square considered a distinct neighborhood?

There is such a desire to carve up Kensington into smaller more marketable neighborhoods. I don't even know where to say I live anymore.

Default Ken Millano

Ken is an absolutely incredible asset for the neighborhood. You should read his weekly history column in the Star.

Olde Richmond? That's screwy, considering people don't even use the "Richmond" tag... (re: west of trenton ave.)

thanks, guys -

really looking for those old school, locally-known names --- like flat iron, which i don't believe was ever a name that made it onto an official city map.

neighborhood boundaries are crazy --- particularly in these days of real estate market-driven neighborhood associations. (i love the "e" on the "olde richmond". for cryin' out loud! are they a new organization? the folks i know who live around there say they live in kensington or "in saint anne's" or "we used to call it flat iron". but definately --- that's kensington. except for a friend's boyfriend, who bought a house there and still clings to the belief he lives in fishtown.)

norris square? culturally now in west kensington, perhaps geographically in south kensington, but folk-historically a part of regular old kensington. at least that is the impression i have gotten.

Well the people who say they live "in saint anne's".. well that would be a parish name and thus only really the catholics, or those who went to catholic school or were closely associated would know those boundaries.

they're meaningless to the rest of us.
