Default grocery store in the area?

rumors abound that a big name market is coming to the area. some say a thriftway on spring garden near 5th and others say whole foods on 2nd and girard. still others say both...

i know the 2nd st project was stalled, but is it resuming? is it really whole foods? i saw construction on spring garden, but is it even a grocery store? thanks in advance for any current info...

I sure hope one is coming, KD! I read on this forum before that a supermarket was being built where that greasy spoon at the corner of 4th and Spring Garden was -- but, when I went there in person and read the zoning sign, it said there was a beauty salon being built there and some other things that I can't remember, but definitely nothing about a supermarket. But maybe you don't need a zoning sign for a supermarket?

I also can't tell you how sick and tired I am of seeing the piles of dirt at 2nd and Girard. Please, BB, do something about it!

Well Pianpple, do you want them to do it right, or just do it quickly?

When dealing with toxic land..I rather them do it right.

I heard there was a market going in at 4th and Spring Garden on the SW corner. Can someone confirm this?....is this the one someone mentioned?

I only mentioned it because I read it somewhere here before. But I don't think it is really being built. I don't see enough space anyway in existing buildings. There are zoning signs stuck on these buildings for other future businesses.

It'd still be cool to have a grocery there, though.

In 1856, when Schmidt's churned out 500 barrels of ale and porter, the brewery thrived alongside dozens of other heavy industries in Northern Liberties.

Henry Deringer, famous for his pocket pistol, built firearms there from 1814 to 1868. The Haig family manufactured cooking furnaces, chimney flues and sewer pipes at a factory on North Second Street from 1844 to 1870. John Harrison first produced American-made sulphuric acid in 1792 at his chemist shop at Third and Green. And starting in 1807 Harrison operated a lead chamber plant for "chemical processes."

By the time Northern Liberties was incorporated into the city proper in 1854, Philadelphia was an industrial giant, boasting several breweries, stove works, factories, textile plants and lumberyards-all of which spewed toxic plumes and discharged contaminated water before there were environmental regulations.

Given this city's past, the controversy surrounding the former Schmidt's Brewery is far from unique.

I hope it just in the soil on that property and not contaminating the air and the people in the area.

A little bit of toxic contamination will toughen you up for the apocalypse.
