Got my first issue of The Spirit yesterday.
It's a really good job of being what The Star was before it was bought out by Knight-Ridder. As I said on fishtown.us, I'll leave it to y'all to decide if that's good or bad.

Finally got my first copy of The Spirit. It's okay. Then I got this past week's The Star. The Star has really amped up its journalist content and efforts in this last issue. Bravo! While it seems ridiculous for a place this small to have TWO local papers, I'll still probably read both because I can't stand to miss out on anything.
It was a nice touch that The Star folks stopped into the last FNA meeting to assure everyone while their boss has changed, they are still the same folks at the paper, except with more funding. And while I am not crazy about the new name or look of formerly Forks and now Crazy Fish Saloon, it was a nice article on the owner and the bar that showed some journalistic integrity. (Incidentally, is anyone tired of fish being associated with all things Fishtown? Can't anyone be even slightly creative anymore with symbols and names?)

I also like using the "FISHTOWN U.S.A." phrase a lot. Like Fishtown is its own soverign state (and, in many ways, it is). |

"Der Freistaat Fischberg" sounds good to me.

So what are you going to use as a Fishtown symbol: a horse, a cat.
First you guys move into an old community . . . and now, you want to get rid of the fish. I was right. It should be OLDE FISHTOWNE. That will serve you right.

I’d heard about the great debate raging in this chat room about the Spirit and Star newspapers in Fishtown, so I thought I’d jump into the scintillating conversation. As an editor of the Star papers, I normally wouldn’t comment on the crap thrown around by Spirit editor Carol Denker, but since she has become so adept at Star-bashing, I can’t help myself.
The most insightful comment I have read on this site came from Brooke, who wrote, and I quote: "Finally got my first copy of the Spirit. It’s okay. Then I got this past week’s Star. The Star has really amped up its journalistic content and efforts in this last issue. Bravo!" This is what it comes down to. I think Fishtown residents must decide if they want a solid, good-looking community newspaper with meaningful stories on issues and local people, which the Star strives to produce, or the dull, rewritten news releases showcased in a dull, circus layout, which the Spirit produces with ease. Denker seems to have a real hang-up that the Star papers were purchased by Philadelphia Newspapers Inc. Rather than bash this corporate acquisition, she’d do better to ask the former owner why he unloaded those papers. Her dismay is misplaced. She deserves to find peace in her life. Cheers, John Scanlon
