Default Street Trees

Does anyone have expierence planting trees in front of their house? We are looking into planting a small tree and this would be a new planting. Now we have a few questions, and we can't seem to get any answers from the city or the Fairmount Park Commission. A few questions:

1. Has anyone here done this?
2. Do you need a permit?
3. Are there local places that provide trees for a donation or do we have to go to a nursery?
4. Is it too late into spring to plant?
5. How far of a pit do you dig?
6. Does anyone know which covers on the sidewalk are currently used by the utility companies, i.e. the square gas cover vs. the round one? And how close can you plant to these without worry abut roots and such?

If anyone out there can help with these questions and/or anyother pertinent info that would be great.

Great thread, as I'm looking to do the same. I thought the city would "buy" a tree for the property when a person bought a house, but I don't know if this is an old wives' tale (or "chronologically gifted spouses' tale" for the PC out there).

Maybe this question could be asked in the "General Discussion" forum, too?

Lots of groups and individuals plant street trees.

You might check with FNA to see if they have done such plantings, or whether they are willing to do yours.

In Old City, we planted hundreds of trees. We didn't need permits, etc. We generally got the homeowner/building owner to agree to care for the tree (but sometimes on streets like 3rd, it was someone a door or two down who cared for the tree.

We always purchased our trees from a nursary so I don't think you can get it for free (unless, FNA would pay for it). One suggestion, buy a slightly smaller tree than you think you want. You'll find big savings in $$ and the tree will grow to the larger size within a couple of years.

Fairmount Park is supposed to care for all street trees in the city but it has neither the incliination nor the budget to do so.

For advise on what trees do well (as well as planting instructions, contact Philadelphia Green at Pennsylvania Horticlultural Society. Web site is:

You can also try the KNCDC at 215-427-0350
Since they run the Garden Center they may have ideas for City Trees as well as being able to point you in the direction of maybe some free trees, (if there are any available)

Good Luck,

You need to eliminate the period from the end.
