Default no more Star newspapers

Apparently the Inquirer bought the building that houses production for the Fishtown, Port Richmond, Bridesburg & North Stars, as well as Girard and Museum Home News. There are no plans to continue production, so this will be their last week. It seems as if all parties are trying to keep it hush hush. Its a sad day when community news is silenced by the mainstream press that already controls both of the city's dailies. As rough as the Star could be, it provided a necessary service for residents, businesses, and organizations for 26 years. Maybe the Star office should be the next target for a protest...

I heard Knight-Ridder bought it from a Star reporter, and that they were undecided whether or not production would continue.

Here's something that a Star writer reported "It is true that we were bought by Knight Ridder, who owns the Inquirer, Daily News, Northeast Times, etc., but we're not going anywhere. The paper will look a little different, but it's essentially the same staff and we're pushing not to have our new boss change things too much."

This sounds very reminiscent of what I saw happen in Miami.

Over a period of time, The Miami Herald (also a Knight-Ridder paper) gradually acquired nearly every neighborhood weekly in the metro area. After their elimination, the Herald began producing bi-weekly "neighbors" supplements tailored to those same neighborhoods.

It wasn't all bad...in some cases the reporting improved...but the genuine local flavor was lost and it obviously forced you to buy the "big" paper if you wanted news about your part of town.

I hope the Star can avoid the same fate.
