Default 5th St to get an Extreme Makeover?

Wake up this morning and see this in the middle of 5th St:

So I got a couple of theroies:

a) 5th Street is going two lanes.

b) 5th is getting what 2nd St just received. Bumped out sidewalks and a newly paved street and *cross fingers* stop lights!

Either way, we will see Monday....

5th Street has always been two lanes. Are you the person I get behind who drives down the middle of the road?

Looks more like they are going to stripe the street....dotted white line in the middle....maybe lines to mark the parking areas. I would be concerned about the red spray paint b/c that often indicates digging for utilities.

5th Street's always been two lanes.

Those lines will disappear as the traffic tends to drive right on them

LOL, I was going to say the same thing! I hate getting stuck behind someone driving down the middle.

The second picture posted by theLovebelow shows a red truck right in the middle, on the dotted line. there goes all hope that the new lines will do anything.

ROFL! I didn't even notice that! Silly me for thinking the lines might help, right?!

I guess they had paint left over after re-lining Girard so they used it on 5th st, because the lines are there and most are going either to the left or right of them. They also did the parking spot lines too...

I was hoping for more, but it'll have to do for now.

Default No More Makeover, That's It

You can thank or blame me for the 5th St. lines. In the final weeks of my NLNA Presidency a group of us got a meeting with the Streets Commissioner to talk about some longstanding annoyances. One of them was a crosswalk-striping issue on 2nd St where it meets Poplar. The north side of the intersection hasn't ever had a crosswalk, so cars don't know where to stop and pedestrians are often scared out of their wits.

It turns out the Streets Dept. doesn't want to come out for just one little striping job - they need volume to make it cost-effective.

So I gave them a big list of long-overdue striping jobs, including the intersections of 3rd and Wildey (where the water main blew up last year) and 4th and Poplar - and all of 5th Street. Much to my surprise, they actually came out and did all of them - except, ironically, for that one crosswalk on 2nd at Poplar. Go figure.

Best,
Matt

Well I thank you! I drove down 5th street over the weekend and not one car was driving down the middle of the street that day, how refreshing! So thank you for the lines! Although I'm sorry that they skipped 2nd & Poplar, that is a scary intersection.
